Ester Partegàs

Part-Time Lecturer

Ester Partegas is a visual artist and educator. Born in La Garriga, Barcelona, in 1972, she lives and works in New York City and Marfa, TX. Her work originates in a fascination with urban space and its most unassuming commodities. Generic items, such as plastic crates, shopping bags, tarpaulins, receipts and bar-coded labels speak about a shared social, economic and affective reality that is as mundane and invisible, as it is powerful in determining behaviors and habits. She addresses conflicts that play out in thematerial world presenting the potential wonder of the most immediate, with the belief that there is a reciprocal process by which things make us as much as we make things.Partegàs’ work has been shown nationally and internationally in venues such as the Sculpture Center, LIC, NY; the Whitney Museum of American Art at Altria, NY; Columbus Museum of Art, OH; Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona; Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid; the Arnolfini Bristol; the Moscow, Athens and Busan Biennials; among others. She has two permanent public works, one in Plaza de las Americas, upper Manhattan, as a commission by the City of NY Department of Cultural Affairs Percent for Art, and another one at the Montenmedio Arte Contemporáneo Collection in Spain; and she’s done several temporary public works in places like the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, Ridgefield, CT; at MetroTech was a commission by Public Art Fund, and at Socrates Sculpture Park among others. She is represented by Foxy Production, New York; Christopher Grimes Gallery, Santa Monica, CA; and NoguerasBlanchard Barcelona/Madrid.
