Artist Bio

Bel Andrade (they/them) is a New Zealand-born, Toronto-raised interdisciplinary transgender and disabled sculpture artist. Often integrating elements of their Crip* identity into their work through investigations of failure and collapse, their practice primarily works to elevate the personal to the monumental. Working primarily in sculpture and installation, Bel is a hands-on maker who examines how material can act as a gateway for tapping into specific histories — the repeated use of myths and their imagery in Bel’s works allows them to create an intersectional sanctuary in which the lines between reality and fiction become intertwined and unraveled.
