Artist Statement

My work explores the feminine body and the trajectory of allowing it to play and indulge. The character in the paintings, a mysterious and unnamed cherry-headed figure, is often depicted in the nude and wearing dark shades to mask identity. Multiple cherry figures are usually displayed simultaneously in each painting as they embody different body types and emotions of bodies who take play more seriously than life itself. The cherry women are placed in environments that are both tropical and surreal, and futuristic, yet nostalgic as they are inspired by vintage video games and other worlds. The work invites women to see themselves and their bodies through a playful lens that refutes the male gaze in a world where women reclaim the comparing of their bodies to the small sweet fruit and transcend the metaphor into an enigma that can never be popped”.The eroticism that is manifested throughout the work aligns with the sexecology of a fabricated world compiled with our real one that links all actions and movements together as inquired in the philosophy of Georges Bataille. My practice is always an indulgent and experimental process where the essence of play is embodied through the intuitive color palette and spontaneous line and figure work.
