Artist Statement

My works build an alternate world where numerous characters, symbols, and motifs live. In a graphic-surrealist style, using bold lines and bright, flat colors, the worlds are built onto paper. These characters exist in seemingly unlivable forms—through differing mutations, transformations, and impossible ingestions and excretions—but always thrive. Many contain abiotic qualities, however, most objects within the paintings are alive. By repeating symbols and creatures throughout the works, it connects the paintings to show that this world contains its own sense of time and that it houses the motifs in a place to escape, without escape. This is a reflection of feelings caused by events occurring in our real world.

This science-fiction-inspired world within the paintings provides an alternate thinking space by allowing a lens to further delve into our current events, experiences, and emotions from real life. It questions our understanding of the world we live in, our interactions with it, with each other, and our presence in a larger universe.
