Artist Statement

In order to explore the perception and representation of dream-like virtual spaces, my oil paintings are made with ceramic spheres to build layers, textures, and juxtapositions between the landscape and the abstract object. The trope of the landscape stands as a metaphor depicting roughness and stillness while the abstract objects symbolize the qualities of precariousness, uncertainty, and ambivalence. I intend to depict the sensory perception, consciousness, and embodied experience, exploring memory and body as a memoir through cutting, layering, and stitching fabric.
I am expressing an attempt to investigate interconnections between cosmos, humans, and nature by depicting objects and spaces in abstract or reduced form while researching neuroscience and
interdisciplinary studies. Meanwhile, my pieces ask questions about dreams: dream space can be seen as a space of in-between—between physical and psychological space—to avoid prejudice and mistreatment in the environment where people are ambivalent about specific subjects. Dreams also indicate some past experiences that might end up erased by others and seemingly become non-existent. My works are an attempt to capture this perception in an effort to redescribe both individual and collective memories while emphasizing the “process” of making.
