Artist Statement

In my thesis work, FAMILY GARBAGE, three life-sized figures sit on wooden chairs passively facing each other around a circle. Their cyberspace home, titled garbage site, is a digital extension of the sculpture, where sounds, video and images pop up as the viewer interacts with the site. Combined, these sculptural and digital elements I have fabricated create a world that viewers can enter and identify with, generating empathy for the plight of the dolls. Through explorations of hybridity, the experience of melancholia, and the production of gendered subjectivity, my work engages themes of systemic oppression and the ambivalent, hapless formation of gendered identity.
