Ranu Mukherjee is an artist who makes hybrid work in moving image, painting and installation to build new imaginative capacities. She is guided by the forces of ecology and non-human agency, diaspora and migration, motherhood and transnational feminisms. The genre of speculative fiction has been critical in Mukherjee’s artistic development, as a guide to considering otherness (human and otherwise) in relation to somatic experience, cultural construction and power. She takes up speculative fiction as a generative method to look at contemporary urgencies as opportunities for renewal. Recent exhibitions and projects include the Karachi Biennial (2019, Pakistan), the De Young Museum (2018, San Francisco), Di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art (2018, Napa, CA), her representing Gallery Wendi Norris (2020, 2017, San Francisco), Pennsylvania College of Art and Design (2017, Lancaster, PN), Asian Art Museum, (2016, San Francisco), Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art (2016) Tarble Arts Center (2017, Charleston, IL). Mukherjee is a Lucas Visual Arts Fellow at Montalvo Arts Center and the recipient of a 2020 Pollock- Krasner Foundation Grant.
