2022 MFA Thesis Exhibition

My interdisciplinary work always comes from the same place, and revolves around themes such as identity politics, globalization, and migration. These concerns within my art explore the world around me and my position in it. My research incorporates the way I perceive the environment as well as its politics. My work is positioned in between several disciplines, from painting to drawing to sculpture or digital media. The relationships within my work are meant to be read in a non-linear way and are built on the cornerstone of deep analysis and research.

Untitled is a work about the list of fundamental rights violations within the European Union. Untitled is an artistic response to the increasing number of illegal attempts to cross the borders of the European Union. Language is perceived as a material, as a tool that lacks aesthetics. This work juxtaposes language to other materials and symbols that encourage the viewer to consider the content of the work in the context of their lives.

Statement: 

Mi trabajo interdisciplinario siempre proviene del mismo lugar y gira en torno a temas como políticas de identidad, globalización y migración.  Estas preocupaciones dentro de mi práctica artística exploran el mundo que me rodea y mi posición en él.  

Mi investigación incorpora la forma en que percibo el medio ambiente, así como su política.  Mi trabajo se posiciona entre varias disciplinas, desde la pintura hasta el dibujo, la escultura o los medios digitales.  Las relaciones dentro de mi trabajo están destinadas a ser leídas de una manera no lineal y se basan en la piedra angular de un análisis e investigación profundos.

 Sin título es un trabajo sobre la lista de violaciones de los derechos fundamentales dentro de la Unión Europea.  Untitled es una respuesta artística al creciente número de intentos ilegales de cruzar las fronteras de la Unión Europea.  El lenguaje es percibido como un material, como una herramienta que carece de estética.  Este trabajo yuxtapone el lenguaje a otros materiales y símbolos que alientan al espectador a considerar el contenido del trabajo en el contexto de sus vidas.

Paula Martin Rivero (b. Zaragoza, Spain)  is an artist and researcher currently based in New York. Martin received her BFA from Universidad Complutense de Madrid. In 2016 she moved to Mexico with the help of the academic excellence scholarship given by Universidad Autonoma de México. Martin is the recipient of the The U.S. Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education (FIPSE) award which allowed her to move to Omaha, Nebraska to continue her research on borders for a year. She holds an MA in Artistic Research and Creation from Universidad Complutense. Martin was given a scholarship to continue her education at Universidad de Buenos Aires but had to come back to Spain in the midst of the ongoing pandemic. She is a recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship, which is currently supporting her in pursuing her MFA in Fine Arts at Parsons School of Design/ The New School.

Paula Martín Rivero (Zaragoza, España) es una artista e investigadora que actualmente reside en Nueva York.  Martin recibió su BFA de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid.  En 2016 se mudó a México con la ayuda de la beca de excelencia académica otorgada por la Universidad Autónoma de México.  Martin recibió el premio del Fondo de EE. UU. para la mejora de la educación postsecundaria (FIPSE), que le permitió mudarse a Omaha, Nebraska, para continuar su investigación sobre las fronteras durante un año. Posteriormente realizó un Máster en Investigación y Creación Artística por la Universidad Complutense.  Martin recibió una beca para continuar su educación en la Universidad de Buenos Aires, pero tuvo que regresar a España en medio de la pandemia en curso.  En 2019 recibió una beca Fulbright, que actualmente la apoya en la obtención de su MFA en Bellas Artes en Parsons School of Design/The New School.
