Nell Painter (the painter formerly known as the historian Nell Irvin Painter) is Edwards Professor of American History, Emerita, Princeton University, and the author of The History of White People and Old in Art School: A Memoir of Starting Over. She is a holder of an MFA in painting from RISD, and lives and works in Newark, New Jersey. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Beinecke Rare Book Library at Yale, the Newark Museum, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Smith College Museum of Art, the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, and the Newark Public Library Rare Prints Collection.
