Janice Guy started making photographic self-portraits in the mid 1970s while studying at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, Germany. By the mid 1980s she had stopped making her own art and became director of the Lia Rumma gallery in Naples, Italy. She moved to New York in the early 1990s where she opened her own gallery. Her photographs re-emerged in 2007 in an exhibition at White Columns, and she has been showing them ever since. Until March 2017 she was the co-owner of the gallery Murray Guy.
