Arnold Joseph Kemp is the recipient of awards and fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, the Joan Mitchell Foundation, Artadia Fund for Art & Dialogue, Art Matters Grant, and Printed Matter Award for Artists. His artworks are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Studio Museum in Harlem and the Berkeley Art Museum. He is the Chairperson of the Department of Painting & Printmaking at Virginia Commonwealth University, and is also one of the founding curators of the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts where over a ten year period he curated solo exhibitions for Mark Dion, Laylah Ali, Ellen Gallagher, Martin Kersels, and Matmos, among others. A recent curatorial project for San Francisco’s Luggage Store Gallery paired experimental filmmakers, Kevin Everson and Akosua Adoma Owusu, together in a two-person exhibition of film installations that plumbed the depths of Black consciousness.
