Topics in 2D: Analog, Catalog

This course delves into topics in 2D conceptual art through analog, or handmade works, and the catalog, or archives and records from the past and present. Through focused and researched projects, we will explore homage in painting, strategies for encoding information in a 2D plane, data collection and diagrams, dissemination and multiples, and performative drawing. This course challenges us to draw a web of connections from the past and present, examining who and what our work is in conversation with, revealing our cultural, personal, and/or political investments in making. Assignments will be open to painting, drawing, print, and lens-based processes and will accompany relevant demos. There will be weekly discussions, readings, and investigations into the works of Adrian Piper, Wendy Red Star, Sadie Barnette, Dario Robleto, Barti Kher, Elijah Burger, Edie Fake, Lorna Simpson, Sheida Soleimani, Kehinde Whiley, Felipe Baeza, Frank Moore, Joiri Minaya, Chella Man, and many more.
Open to: Bachelors degree in Fine Arts majors, others by permission of the Fine Arts program. Pre-requisite(s): PUFA 2200 Core Studio 1: Sign & System, PUFA 2220 Core Studio 1: 2D, and at least one of the following: PUFA 2230 Core Studio 1: 3D or PUFA 2240 Core Studio 1: 4D.
