In its most literal sense, geometry is defined as “a branch of mathematics that deals with points, lines, angles, surfaces, and solids” (Merriam-Webster, 2014). Forming the building blocks of our understanding of the physical world, geometry is art’s hidden playmate, rarely mentioned but always close at hand. Through drawing, painting, sculpture, and photography, these artists use geometry as a visual and metaphorical touchstone from which to explore diverse and far-reaching concerns. From the secular to the sacred, from Photoshop to photosynthesis, these artists explore the geometry that underlies our world.
