Parsons facutly Baseera Khan debuts First Solo Exhibition in New York with “iamuslima”

Parsons faculty Baseera Khan debuts iamuslima, her first solo exhibition in New York, at Participant Inc.

Of the exhibition Khan says, “The work in iamuslima deals with historical identity – traditional representations, its misrepresentations that have led to a very volatile social environment globally, but more specifically within capitalist driven societies such as ours, America. This volatility creates a need for self-censorship and other secrecies amongst people that have felt marginalized and othered, even within groups that are also othered. Self-censorship and secrecies, I learned at a very young age, can be aestheticized, and this gave me agency to combat racism, reverse racism, prejudice, and sexism. Using fashion and linguistic-shifts as political medium iamuslima bounces around textiles, archives, performance, and sculpture. This exhibition came together through a collective spirit and is meant to be a sanctuary space for those that need respite.”
