Group Show
Migratory Patterns showcases the works of artists who were raised in Latin America but currently live and work in the US. Margarita Sánchez Urdaneta, Felipe Muhr and Paz Ortúzar explain: “We are interested in problematizing what it means to be working in a foreign context, while rethinking the struggles rooted in our common ground: Latin America. We acknowledge that working and exhibiting in the US entails the adoption of a different set of parameters through which our work is experienced. As Latin American artists we ask ourselves about the prevalence of the stereotypes that surround our practices and the frictions that this creates when producing work that is to be read in both contexts.” The participating artists reflect on these and other questions through a wide range of mediums, including photography, video, performance, sculpture and drawing. Each piece in the show embodies a particular point of view, recreating the multiplicity and the complexity of the subject matter—there is no single narrative within Latin America. The exhibition provides an opportunity to revitalize the dialogue between our home countries and the USA from a critical perspective.
