Moderator: Tara Asgar, Artist & Activist, Bangladesh
Panel Description:
This panel explores the growing trend of artists fleeing their home countries for safety and freedom of expression. Moderated by Tara Asgar, an Artist and Activist who has personally faced forced displacement from Bangladesh to the USA, the discussion will address emotional safety, the impact of geographical hierarchies in the art market, and the complexities of at-risk artistic expression.
Panelists include Ashley Tucker, Co-Executive Director of Artistic Freedom Initiative, and Alison Russo, Senior Director of the Artist Protection Fund and others. By bringing together artists and art administrators with personal experience navigating different geographical territories as both artists and refugee immigrants, the panel will provide unique insights into the challenges and opportunities displaced artists face. Drawing on key insights from art administrators working closely with at-risk artists, it will examine how these movements influence artistic practice and explore whether alternative methods exist to support at-risk artists without resorting to forced displacement and relocation.
