Fine Arts Visiting Artist Series MOMENTUM with Julie Lænkholm

Thursday September 26th 3pm
Room 502, 25 East 13th street, floor 5

Julie Lænkholm  is a Danish artist based in Copenhagen and New York. She graduated in 2015 with a master’s degree in Fine Arts from Parsons, the New School for Design.

Her work is centered on craft traditions and healing practices performed by women. While she works in different mediums, most of her production consists in “wool paintings” and dyed textiles. As part of her practice, she travels to different parts of the world to meet local women and learn about plant dying techniques, healing practices, and other crafts. On her trips she delves into “forgotten” bodies of knowledge, which has been transmitted orally between women throughout generations. In recent years, she has thus made trips to Iceland, the Sri Lankan jungle, and to Uganda to meet with local women and learn from them. She is fascinated with the collective learning processes, because of their contrast to the individualism typically valued in Western culture, and she thinks about these contrast within a postcolonial framework.

Laenkholm has received several grants in support of her work, among others from the Danish Arts Foundation. In 2017 the Remmen Foundation nominated her as ‘young artist of the year’. She has put on solo exhibitions at various institutions, including the Husavík Museum in Iceland, ‘Tranen Kunsthal in Copenhagen, the Contemporary Art Center in Copenhagen, the Chart Art Fair, Gallery Eighteen Gallery in Copenhagen, and at Sodú 4 in Lithuania.

She has held residencies in Lunga in Iceland, and at the Nida Art Colony in Lithuania. Later this year she will be an artist-in-residence at the Bunku Matsushima Museum, Japan, and subsequently at the CCA Andrax, Contemporary Art Center Mallorca, Spain.
