25East Gallery is delighted to present Material Automatism, a group exhibition recontextualizing
“Automatism,” in art, defined as, “the avoidance of conscious intention in producing works of art,
especially by using mechanical techniques or subconscious associations.” As artists living and
working under late-stage capitalism and climate breakdown, our “mechanical techniques” and
“subconscious associations” seem to be replaced by a varying level of chance dictated by
material availability. This project encompasses a diverse selection of works whose form is
dictated by the qualities found within non traditionally collected materials and experimental or
automatic practices, with a focus on how the selection of material dictates process.
