1. Emergency Grant – The Tri-State Relief Fund to Support Non-Salaried Workers in the Visual Arts
The Willem de Kooning Foundation, the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation, Teiger Foundation, and the Cy Twombly Foundation, as part of their respective COVID-19 relief efforts, have established an emergency relief grant program that will provide $1,250,000 in aid to Tri-State non-salaried workers in the visual arts who have experienced financial hardship from lack of income or opportunity as a direct result of the COVID-19 crisis. The program, initiated by The Willem de Kooning Foundation, will be administered in partnership with NYFA.
The Tri-State Relief Fund to Support Non-Salaried Workers in the Visual Arts will distribute one-time unrestricted cash grants of $2,000 each to freelance, contract, or non-salaried archivists, art handlers, artist/photographer’s assistants, cataloguers, database specialists, digital assets specialists, image scanners/digitizers, and registrars. Applicants must show proof of residency in Connecticut, New Jersey, and/or New York from the last two years. They must also have a minimum of five years experience in the aforementioned behind-the-scenes roles in the visual arts, and be able to show proof of critical financial need due to loss of income directly related to the COVID-19 crisis.
This emergency relief fund program will offer three rounds of applications: May 5-6, May 19-20, and June 2-3.
We encourage you to visit our regularly-updated Emergency Grants page for more COVID-19 specific resources that may be available to you during this time.
Please visit NYFA’s website for more information, including a list of application questions and requirements for completing the application form. All questions should be directed to freelance@nyfa.org.
2. Artist Relief Grant
To help artists affected by COVID-19 and affirm their essential role in society, Joan Mitchell Foundation has joined forces with fellow arts funders to form Artist Relief, a new national, multidisciplinary initiative offering rapid, unrestricted funding of $5,000 to individual artists in all disciplines, plus additional resources to help those in need.
Artist Relief is launching with $10 million, including $5 million in seed funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to match $5 million in initial contributions from an array of foundations. We have increased and reallocated the Joan Mitchell Foundation’s Emergency Grants budget to this fund and encourage artists in need to apply directly to Artist Relief.

June 20, 2020–June 20, 2021
Artists (of all disciplines) residing anywhere in the world can participate. Artists need only submit a text, SoundCloud link, jpeg, or YouTube or vimeo link, and TransCultural Exchange will create a URL for their submission on
Hello World’s website. Based on the information provided by each participant, TransCultural Exchange will also categorize each submission by geographic location, submission type and genre. Submissions will then be arranged in groups by categories. For instance, one group might consist of 4 vimeo links, but the 4 videos will be by artists in 4 different countries, somewhat like what TransCultural Exchange did with
Here There and Everywhere. Artists also must submit the name of a venue that agrees to post a link to
Hello World on their website, by
Hello World’s launch on June 20. Full details are available at
Hello World.
