Artist Statement
My photography practice explores myself as an anonymous observer, capturing fragments of strangers’ lives without their knowledge and exposing the candid moments of their daily routines. My work is influenced by my personal experiences living in Canada and the United States and constantly feeling like an outsider.
My drawing works focus on landscapes and plant life, often omitting human presence. I draw inspiration from personal memories and reference photographs, paying meticulous attention to detail and utilizing linework and mark-making to convey an emotional response to the subject matter.
Yifei Wang is an artist who works in both photography and drawing, exploring themes of voyeurism. Through her photography series, Yifei captures candid moments of her neighbors’ daily lives, revealing intimate details in mundane and inviting viewers to experience the same voyeuristic perspective. In her drawing practice, she focuses on depicting landscape and plant life through expressive linework and mark-making. Her drawing works reflect the themes of observation and imaginary landscapes.
She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Emily Carr University of Art + Design in 2019 and is an MFA candidate at Parsons School of Design.
