Artist Bio
Rengu Zhang works in drawing, installation, performance and moving images to investigate questions about feminine identity, boundaries, becoming, belonging and longing. Her practice relies on the fluidities of a trans-cultural, trans-historical and trans-media hybrid approach. Born in Guiyang, China, she currently lives in X’an and New York as a netizen of the world. Since being at Parsons, she has been involved in several curatorial projects including; Inundated and the upcoming Left Unsaid, Miss(In) Personae. She was an artist tenant at Dorchester Art Project and her work has been in group exhibits in Xi’an, China, Boston, MA, and Greece as well as the private collection of the Copelouzos Family Art Museum in Greece.

Artist Statement
Using a trans-cultural and trans-historical approach, I orbit among the handmade, the digital, still and moving image. I navigate through fluidities across perceptions, languages, geographies and cultures. Fiction and fact are blurred to make inquiries about the construction of the feminine identity, boundaries, becoming, belonging and longing. My work references both the panorama of the human experience and autobiographical accounts, using pseudo-landscapes or non-places as vehicles of altered realities and imaginings. Currently the core to my artmaking involves the vulnerabilities of being in transit and its symptoms of loss, rootlessness, and optimism.
