2022 MFA Thesis Exhibition

For this exhibition, carolina muñoz awad presents every forty two times, one., a work that is best described as a performative laboratory for the artist and invited audience. muñoz awad has been working for the past year with collaborative performance, both guided and improvisational, studying the close interaction between performer and sandbags. These sandbags are meant to be carried, held, touched, cared for, and even talked to. The artist opens the piece to the immense possibilities and freedom of individual bodies towards the material. They might feel bodily enough, therapeutical, or just like a space to feel less alone in the city. 

The wooden framework serves as an open structure that can hold the bodies while they’re not being active and/or activated. It also responds to the artist’s own methods of inventories and grids that underlay her theoretical work. The shapes and colors of the bags respond to a primal level of this work that is constantly subject to change, as it will do in the gallery during the length of the exhibition. There will be daily guided performances by muñoz awad and whomever wants to show up and hang.

Para esta exposición, carolina muñoz awad presenta every forty two times, one. (cada cuarenta y dos veces, una.), obra que puede ser descrita como un laboratorio performativo para la artista y el público invitado. Durante el último año, muñoz awad ha estado trabajando con performance colaborativa, tanto guiada como improvisada, estudiando la interacción cercana entre cuerpo humano y sacos de arena. Estos sacos de arena están pensados para ser llevados, sostenidos, tocados, cuidados e incluso para hablar con ellos. La artista abre la pieza a las inmensas posibilidades y libertad de los cuerpos individuales hacia el material. Pueden resultar suficientemente corporales, terapéuticos o simplemente creadores de un espacio para sentirse menos solo en la ciudad. 

El armazón de madera sirve de estructura abierta que puede sostener los cuerpos mientras no estén activos y/o sean activados. También responde a los métodos propios de la artista de inventarios y cuadrículas que subyacen en su trabajo teórico. Las formas y colores de los sacos responden a un nivel primario de este trabajo que está constantemente sujeto a cambios, como lo hará en la galería durante la duración de la exposición. Habrá performances diarias guiadas por muñoz awad, para quien quiera participar y colgar con ellxs.

carolina muñoz awad (b. Santiago, Chile) is an MFA candidate in Fine Arts at Parsons School of Design/The New School and currently holds the President’s Scholarship in the program. She has been based in New York City since 2021. muñoz awad graduated with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in architecture from the Pontificia Universidad Católica in 2018. After architecture school, she worked as an architect, and then as researcher for her former university and The National Fund for Scientific and Technological Development of Chile. In 2019, she started experimenting with materials and performance, trying to respond to personal questions that architecture couldn’t resolve for her: How do we use our body in space? What does it mean to use space? And how do we perceive (our) human presence? muñoz awad has exhibited her work in Santiago, Chile; Albany, New York; and New York, NY.. She has attended the Arts Letters & Numbers Residency in upstate New York.

carolina muñoz awad (n. Santiago, Chile) es candidata a un MFA en Bellas Artes en Parsons School of Design/The New School y actualmente posee la Beca del Presidente en el programa. Previamente, muñoz awad se graduó con una licenciatura y una maestría en arquitectura de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile en 2018. Después de sus estudios en arquitectura, carolina trabajó como arquitecta y luego como investigadora para su antigua universidad y el Fondo Nacional de Desarrollo Científico y Tecnológico del mismo país. En 2019, comenzó a experimentar con materiales y performance, tratando de responder a preguntas personales que la arquitectura no podía resolver para ella: ¿Cómo usamos nuestro cuerpo en el espacio? ¿Qué significa usar el espacio? ¿Y cómo percibimos (nuestra) presencia humana? muñoz awad ha expuesto su obra en Santiago, Chile; Albany, Nueva York; y Nueva York, NY. carolina también ha asistido a la residencia artística Arts Letters & Numbers en el norte del estado de Nueva York en más de una ocasión, y se encuentra radicada en Estados Unidos desde 2021.
