Abby Denson’s Dolltopia hits NYC!

abby

Dolltopia
Saturday, October 3, 2009, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m
.

Giant Robot is proud to celebrate the release of Dolltopia with a signing by writer and artist Abby Denson (Parsons Illustration Alum!).

A natural follow-up to Denson’s critically acclaimed, self-published, yaoi-influenced comic zine about high-school love, Tough Love (which became a Lulu Award-winning anthology in 2007), Dolltopia is a highly stylized depiction of dolls trying to bust out of the stereotypical boxes that they are packaged in. Will the protagonists, who resemble Barbie and G.I. Joe, liberate themselves from their suburban and he-man trappings? The art is disarmingly simple and the raw storytelling has the rare quality of being able to tap into a reader’s recollections of youthful confusion and feel genuine to young people themselves.

In addition to Denson signing copies of her work, there will be cupcakes and a doll makeover contest. Whoever brings the best made-over doll will receive a signed copy of Dolltopia!

Denson will be signing the long-awaited graphic novel from 6:00 to 8:00 on Saturday, October 3.

Thursday, September 24, 2009 7:00 PM
Slide Shows, Q+A and Signing

NYC is abuzz with excitement over R.O. Blechman and R. Sikoryak joint presentation of their new D+Q books at the Strand this Thursday night at 7 PM. Both R. and R.O. will be presenting slide shows, taking questions and signing the night away. Don’t miss this event! The Village Voice recommends the event by the two “talented satirists” as does the New Yorker.

Need more convincing than that? Well, Steven Heller chose Blechman’s Talking Lines last week to talk about in his Daily Heller column at Print where he states: “All of [Blechman’s] books are a joy, but the bottom line: This one is exceptional.” And there are two interviews with Sikoryak, check them out! The NY Daily News and Publishers Weekly.

Quick Hit: Steven Guarnaccia’s reinterpretation of a classic

3pigs2

As Steve Heller says:

It’s never too early to introduce children to design (or egotistical designers). My favorite Italian publisher, Corraini Editore, has published my favorite American illustrator (with an Italian surname), Steven Guarnaccia’s architectonic take on The Three Little Pigs (in English and Italian).

Couldn’t have said it any better!  Parsons Illustration Chair Steven Guarnaccia has a new children’s book out called “The Three Little Pigs” and it tells the classic story but infuses every aspect with architecture, casting the pigs as Frank Gehry, Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright.  You can grab your copy directly from the publisher Corraini.

Hazel Santino illustrates for the Vera List Art Collection

FINAL writing award poster 08.04.09

Click on the image above for a full-size version of Illustration Junior Hazel Santino’s fantastic poster illustration for the Vera List Art Collection Writing awards.  Look for the posters around the New School community soon!  We’ll also be blogging about the contest itself soon–it’s a great opportunity for students to express their analytical and/or their creative side by engaging some of the amazing art we have right here in our buildings.  So keep your eye out for those details.

Congrats, Hazel!

Quick Hit: Bonnie Gloris’ Brain Topography

BrainTopEmailFinal.jpg

“The Immersion of the Senses,” by Parsons Illustration Alum Bonnie Gloris, appears in the May issue of Brain Topography,  A Journal of Cerebral Function and Dynamics. The oil painting, which depicts the five boroughs of New York City,  each representing a sensory organ, illustrates the journal’s preface. This special issue was widely distributed at the International Multisensory Research Forum’s 10th annual conference in New York this past June 29 – July 2, 2009.

Congrats, Bonnie!
