Art13 Benefit Auction

PS126 / Manhattan Academy of Technology is holding its annual Art13 Benefit Auction on Tuesday, June 21st. The auction helps to fund the school’s art program, as well as being an opportunity to showcase work by the students of school. The event is being hosted by Cey Adams of Def Jam records and will be held at Lombard-Freid Projects.

The auction includes work from current and recent Parsons Illustration Faculty members Melinda Beck, Gregory Benton, Edward del Rosario, James Gallagher, Jordin Isip, Tara McPherson and Chang Park as well as Illustration Alumni William Hatch Crosby, AJ Fosik, Hiro Kurata, Paula Searing and Hazel Lee Santino. Jordin Isip helped to organize the event and collect the work. Over 50 students from PS126 will also be featured in the exhibit.

Tickets are $20, or $10 for students. The auction runs from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. (bidding on items ends at 8).

It features interviews with renown artists as well as fans, collectors, and musicians.

Great feature in the NYTimes on Jonathan Levine Gallery

This past weekend, the New York Times did a fantastic write-up of the Jonathan Levine Gallery, who is celebrating their fifth anniversary. The Gallery has always been a champion of illustration and shows the work of multiple Parsons Illustration alums and faculty members. Here’s a snippet from the write-up:

For the current fifth-anniversary exhibition at his New York gallery Jonathan LeVine has filled it with works by 35 artists, most of whom he represents. The space is in Chelsea, but there’s no cerebral conceptualism, cool abstraction or painterly gesture on view.

Instead this work, variously labeled Lowbrow Art, Pop Surrealism and perhaps most accurately Pop Pluralism, is the skateboarding, graffiti-tagging, sometimes bratty and rebellious younger sibling of the art shown in most of the neighborhood’s locations. Still, the art in the Jonathan LeVine Gallery seems at home in Chelsea in a way it did not five years ago. After years on the fringes of the art world, “we’ve come to a turning point,” Mr. LeVine said recently. “The mainstream is embracing this work.”

This is an awesome time-lapse video of Parsons Illustration Faculty Tara McPherson creating a special art installation at Choque Cultural Gallery in Sao Paolo, Brazil back in the summertime. It surfaced awhile back (we shared it on Facebook and Twitter), but it’s still pretty awe-inspiring and is definitely worth another look. You can see more images and commentary on this project over at the I Love Offset website.

Tara will be back teaching in the Spring and we’ll be glad to have her back. 🙂

Editor’s Note: This week, we are featuring three entries by students who worked at the Parson’s Illustration tables at the MoCCA Festival this past June. Our final narrative installment is by newly minted Illustration Alum, Christine Young.

The MoCCA Fest was so much funnnn! Even though it was really hot in there and I felt like I was about to pass out by the end of it, I would have gladly done so because it was such a great experience seeing a bunch of great art, comics, zines and shirts and meeting cool artists and people from all around the world all under one huge roof! Our Parsons Illustration table had a lot of great prints, books and zines by our fellow students (ya’ll rule), and we sold a bunch too! Among those who were there repping our department were: Beryl Chung, Sophia Chang, Katie Turner, Grace Lang, Sydney Seltzer, Kevin Lee, and Steven Guarnaccia.

Along with selling and trading, I did alot of buying cuz it’s really hard not to cuz of all the amazing things, which was very overwhelming, in the best way possible. I was running around like a school kid after lunch. There were Parsons teachers there too at their own tables such as Neil Swaab, Nora Krug and Tara McPherson selling mad stuff, ya know, no big. And, there were guest lectures by artists such as Adrian Tomine and Gary Panter who were signing stuff all day. Sophia got Adrian to sign her a poster and book, and he did a really cool doodle and I was jealous.

And soooo to sum it up, by the end of the day I went home from Mocca a very happy person with a bag full of awesome comics, zines, shirts and most importantly, a brand new list of art crushes.

Check out this great video of Parsons Illustration faculty Tara McPherson talking about her artwork, specifically her work with vinyl toys. This featurette will be part of a larger documentary called The Vinyl Frontier, by Daniel Zana. In addition to Tara, the documentary will feature work and interviews with a ton of other amazing artists like Attaboy, Tim Biskup, Dalek, Tristan Eaton, Ron English, Frank Kozik, and Gary Baseman. Here’s an excerpt from an interview with the film’s creator, Daniel Zana, which was featured on ToyCyte last year:

TC: For those who haven’t seen the trailer, describe your movie in a nutshell.

DZ: When I tell people I’m making a movie on vinyl toys, some ask, “Are you making a movie on vinyl records or sex toys?” You’d be surprised at how many people don’t know these toys exist. I think it would be neat to show the history of why you have this piece of plastic in your hands. The history of the toy isn’t necessary but you have more appreciate once you understand its history.

I want to talk about where they came from – to intellectualize the discussion about vinyl toys. Are these toys or pieces of art? Why should people take a look at it one way or the other? I want to re-shape the discussion about toys.

There’s so much history behind the pieces. The movie is for members who visit toy forums and are really into particular artists. I’m also making the movie for people who like counter-culture, who are into art. I want vinyl toys to be legitimized as an art form, and I want toy artists to be known for their work. How often do you see on-camera interviews with these artists? Every artist deserves a time to shine.

Parsons Part-time Faculty Tara McPherson gave us the scoop on an upcoming exhibition of new works called “Inside Nostalgia,” at the Dorothy Circus Gallery in Rome:

I have done 4 large new paintings for this exhibition, and will include a couple small ones as well. These new pieces deal with concepts within the theme of this show; How the dead miss the living and vice versa. These new paintings deal with some much darker subject matter than I usually paint. I had a great time working on them. Please contact the Gallery if you are interested to be put on their wait list to see the paintings.
