Reading Paintings one-night-only group show in DUMBO tonight

Reading Paintings showcases a group of (mostly) recent Parsons Illustration graduates with works that address literature and the collaborations between image and text. It is a one night only event. “It’s going to be a really fun time with booze, music and cool art by cool people.”

6 Parsons Students with 10 Images Selected to Appear in American Illustration 32 Annual Book

Parsons Illustration seniors Franca Barone, Leigh Cunningham, Kristen Davis, and Meghann Stephenson, and recent graduates Monica Ramos and Hazel Lee Santino (class of 2012) were selected by a distinguished jury to be included in the American Illustration 32 annual book. This year’s distinguished jury included Jordan Awan, The New Yorker; Sergio Baradat, United Nations Postal Administration; Chad W. Beckerman, Abrams; Joele Cuyler, Real Simple; Jennifer Daniel, Bloomberg Businessweek; Grace Lee, Priest + Grace; and Alexandra Zsigmond, The New York Times.

From 8,742 pieces entered by over 1,282 illustrators, magazines, agencies, publishers, and schools, the jury selected only 369 images to appear in the book and represent the best pictures from 2011. It will be printed and distributed worldwide in hardcover this fall. Congratulations to them and their teachers!

6 Parsons Students Awarded Scholarships from the Society of Illustrators; Masuko Jo gets top prize!

Six Parsons Illustration students were awarded scholarships in the 2013 Society of Illustrators Student Scholarship Competition. Only 33 works from the 271 selected by the jury for the show from the initial 8,595 submissions received scholarships. Congratualtions to them for this incredible achievement.

Space//Form

 

Senior Thesis faculty Jordin Isip is included in Space//Form, a group exhibition curated by Sven Davis at  Breeze Block Gallery in Portalnd, Oregon. The opening reception is Thursday, Sept. 6th, 6-10 pm.

Space//Form centers around notions of the architectural landscape.  Over 100 of the most relevant young contemporary artists were each given an identical 10×10 inch panel and invited to create a work depicting their interpretation of space and form within either the constructed or the natural environment. Artists include: Adam Wallacavage, Alex Lukas, Chloe Early, Clayton Brothers, Doze Green, Eric White, Gary Taxali, Geoff McFetridge, James Marshall (Dalek), Jeff Soto, Jim Houser, Kozyndan, Kristen Schiele, Mars-1, Matt Leines, Maya Hayuk, Rich Jacobs, Rostarr, Tim Biskup, and Wayne White.

 

One Hundred Dollars

Recent Parsons Illustration graduates  Su kyung (Hannah) LeeRachel Levit, and Hazel Lee Santino, and faculty Melinda Beck, Jordin Isip , and Taylor McKimens were included in One Hundred Dollars, a group show curated by Andrew Smenos and Sergio Barrale this summer at Littlefield in Brooklyn, NY. Each piece by the one hundred artists had to use a dollar bill as its canvas. Some of the other artists included were Daniel Davidson, Tricia Keightley, Rob Leecock, Matt Leines, Kristen Schiele, Joe Sorren, and Eric White. These 13 works from the Parsons Illustration Program were chosen from over 8,000 pieces entered by illustrators, magazines, agencies, publishers, and schools. Congratulations to them and their teachers!

Parsons Illustration seniors Iain BurkeKatie Dunham, Sukyung (Hannah) LeeRachel Levit, Chelsey Pettyjohn, and Julee Yoo, and recent graduates William Hatch Crosby and Rachel Friedman (class of 2011) were selected by a distinguished jury to be included in the American Illustration 31 annual. It will be printed in full color and distributed worldwide in hardcover this fall.

From 8,000 pieces entered by over 1,200 illustrators, magazines, agencies, publishers, and schools, the jury selected only 439 images to appear in the book and represent the best pictures from 2011. Students and professionals were juried altogether and when the dust settled 30 student images were selected. With an unprecedented 11 of the 30 coming from the Parsons Illustration Program, Parsons ruled this year! Congratulations to them and their teachers!

Melted City – Paper Works on Paper

“Melted City”, a show curated by Parsons Illustration faculty  Jordin Isip and Filipino artist Louie Cordero opened on March 24th at Blanc Compound in Mandalyuong, Philippines. The ten person works-on-paper show (five artists chosen by each curator) includes Parsons Illustration Program alumni Hiro Kurata (’04), Hazel Lee Santino (’12), and Paula Searing (’11). The other artists are Vic Balanon, Patrick Cruz, Robert Gutierrez, Rob Leecock, Matt Leines, Jacob Lindo, and Yuji Maruyama. The exhibit runs through April 14, 2012.
