Nature Vs. Nurture opens Nov. 4 featuring Illustration Alums & Faculty

Bonnie Gloris (Parsons Illustration ’06) sent us the following email and information about a show opening this week and her own awesome accomplishments!  She writes:

I thought you would like to hear about a very interesting exhibition I’m curating that opens next week at Broadway Gallery NYC. The show includes several Parsons Illustration Department alumni and faculty members, including myself.  I thought you’d also like to hear that as a result of this curatorial project, Broadway Gallery NYC has hired me full-time as their Gallery Manager and also as the Art Director of their publication “NY Arts Magazine”.

Nature Vs. Nurture collects images that depict the tension between opposing forces, one wild and one domestic, that characterize the human psyche.

Congrats to Bonnie on her new role at the gallery, and to everyone else on their inclusion in this exciting show.

The Exquisite Book
More details on the book:

In The Exquisite Book, one hundred indie artists play an ingenious version of the Exquisite Corpse drawing game. Each adorns a page with artwork—having seen only the page of the artist immediately prior and using a single horizon line to connect the two. Some continue the “story” quite literally while others build on the previous page in more fanciful ways. This astonishing volume’s format is as unique as its content, with each of the book’s ten chapters residing on a ten-page accordion pull-out, allowing readers to view the art continuously. With an illustrated foreword by Dave Eggers, and art from such luminaries as James Jean and (Parsons Illustration Alum) Jill Bliss, this charming book is, simply, exquisite.

Garret Pruter and Lulu Wolf make it into Illustrators 52!

It is our pleasure to announce that Senior year Illustration Program students Garrett Pruter and Lulu Wolf have had one piece each selected to be in the Society of Illustrator’s Illustrators 52. The works were created this fall in Senior Thesis with Jordin Isip. The original art will be exhibited at the Society of Illustrators in January as well as published in the accompanying book. This is a high achievement and honor, congratulations to Garrett and Lulu!

New Image Art is pleased to announce a new group show entitled “14 Artists.” Selected through a series of studio visits and correspondences 14 young artists have to come together culminating figurative style in various mediums from painting and drawings to sculpture and collage.

Dennis McNett (Brooklyn, NY) will be exhibiting his striking sculpture of a giant Wolfbat. Offsetting these are evocative images by Paul Wackers (San Francisco, CA), pairing decorative and organic, textile-like patterning to create colorful landscapes. Paintings by Richard Colman (San Francisco, CA) along with collages by Erik Foss (New York, NY) depict edgy erotic subject matter that enchant or shock, to the viewers delight. Drawing on psychedelic counterculture is the vivacious portraiture of Eddie Ruscha (Los Angeles, CA), alongside equally spirited painterly images of popular magazine covers by Kellesimone Waits (Los Angeles, CA). Lori D. (Portland, OR), a regular jane of all trades adds to all of this with folk-like paintings that are often humorous in nature with an animated quality to them. Layers and layers of torn, collaged newspaper under every painting give texture and depth to (Parsons Illustration Adjunct Faculty) Jordin Isip‘s (Brooklyn, NY) images of pensive figures. Juxtaposing the whimsical appeal of Jordin Isip is artist Cleon Peterson (Los Angeles, CA). His hyper-violent paintings reflect the anxiety of our times with clashing figures symbolizing struggle between power and submission in the fluctuating architecture of contemporary society. Recycled artwork by The Date Farmers echoes Mexican-American heritage rooted in California pop culture. Their paintings, collages and three-dimensional sculptures contain elements influenced by graffiti, Mexican street murals, traditional revolutionary posters, sign painting, prison art and tattoos. Keeping the blood flowing through the veins of the streets is the art of Judith Supine (Brooklyn, NY) with his distinct color palette, subject matter, technique, and bold themes; his street installations and collages resonate with a growing audience. Reverberating this is graphic imagery of Skullphone’s (Los Angeles, CA) large painted canvas. Adding a playful yet charming element to the group is muralist and painter My Mo (Berlin, Germany) with hand-painted monsters on brown paper bags.

FIFTY24SF is proud to host the 19th installment of Rich Jacob’s renowned “Move” series.

“Move” is an ever evolving group exhibition that boasts a myriad of artists from across the U.S. Everyone one from Jordin Isip and Evan Hecox to Dave Ellis and Barry McGee have been involved in one or more versions of the “ Move” movement.  Rich Jacobs, the founder and curator, has been keeping the “Move” alive for over ten years and continues to bring some of the best artists together for the eclectically composed event. Mixing various styles and mediums to the point of (what would seem like) chaos, Rich builds an orchestra of sensory stimuli.

Who is Rich Jacobs?

This internationally renowned artist is recognized as much for his distinctive illustrations as his role as a successful and innovative curator for more than a decade. Jacob’s natural ability to unite the best talent under one roof stems from his genuine nature and, the desire to expose the public to good art and artists. He has a unique way of cherishing the everyday details of life, and recreates the chaos of the daily hustle by engaging over 20 artists to participate in each new edition of “MOVE” Rather than stick to one aesthetic, Rich pulls from a well of talent, mixing photographers and writers to graphic designers and illustrators for a well rounded experience.

Last Night: Dime Bag at Giant Robot

Curated by Jordin Isip (Illustration Faculty) and Rodger Stevens (Illustration Alum and Faculty), Dime Bag closes tonight at Giant Robot New York.  The show has been getting some fantastic press, including coverage by NYMag’s Culture Vulture blog (great slideshow included!) and Peggy Roalf at DART.  Here’s an excerpt from Peggy’s write-up:

The show is the brainchild of Jordin Isip and Rodger Stevens, art school buddies who came up with the idea when they realized what a huge art network of artists they had just from hanging out socially. They wanted to bring as many artists together as possible to create new work with only one small – but huge – restriction: Each piece must fit into a 3-by-3-inch ziplock bag.

Isip and Rodgers invited artists representing an extraordinary variety of disciplines, including painters, illustrators, graphic designers, filmmakers, photographers, and product designers. Each of the artists was sent one of the little baggies and asked to fill it in any way they wished.

I found Jordin by phone in his studio today and he said, “We wanted to have an exhibit where the show itself, as well as the individual pieces, are a work of art.” He certainly succeeded, and GR/New York’s small gallery space proves to be an ideal environment for the art. I found myself looking at each of the three walls of the installation as a whole element before zeroing in on individual images. In fact, I spent quite a while looking at each piece, with the idea of purchasing one.

Giant Robot is proud to host a tiny exhibition of colossal proportions curated by artists Jordin Isip and Rodger Stevens.

Dime Bag 3 is the ninth in an ongoing series of events by Isip and Stevens, bringing together over 200 artists from New York City and beyond representing an extraordinary variety of disciplines. Painters, illustrators, graphic designers, filmmakers, photographers, product designers, and others have been invited to create artworks specifically designed to be exhibited in 3-inch plastic bags: dime bags. Each artist was sent one of the symbolic baggies and asked to fill it in any way they wished.

Let’s face it. It’s been a tough year so far and we can all use a little levity. So with that in mind, we decided to make our summer group show fun – fun for the gallery, our artists and our collectors. We’ve invited 22 artists who have shown here in group or solo shows and asked each of them to invite 2 of their choice. It could be someone they know or not, someone they owe a favor, someone they’d like to see get a break, someone they’ve always wanted an excuse to meet. The only rules are it’s got to be work they are personally excited about and all of the work has to be 10” x 10” (small works = smaller prices = that’s where the fun for collectors part comes in).  And on Saturday, June 20th, from 4 to 6 pm we’ll welcome the summer season with an artist’s reception complete with lemonade, cookies and good vibes all around.
