Vote for Guillermo!

Parsons Illustration Alum Guillermo Riveros (’09) tipped us off (via email) that he’s involved in a photography portfolio contest, hosted by artistswanted.org.  The title of the contest is “The Power of Self,” an international competition celebrating the vitality of self portraiture. A panel of judges including actor Steve Buscemi, director Chris Weitz, Guggenheim curator Helen Hsu and Flavorpill founder Sascha Lewis will award one artist a package of incredible prizes including six months of free living at The Edge in New York City or $7007 in cash. The most popular portfolio as voted by the public will also receive $1,000 cash.

Call for Entries: Illustrators 52!

ILLUSTRATORS 52 is now accepting entries online and Nora Krug, Associate Professor of Illustration, is Chair of the competition this year!

To upload your entries, please format your artwork to these specs:

72 dpi, RGB, JPEG file, 700 pixels on the longest side.

Please provide all of the appropriate credit information for each entry. THIS INFORMATION MUST BE COMPLETED TO BE JUDGED!

ELIGIBILITY

Any illustration created or initially published between October 1, 2008 and November 1, 2009 that has not been accepted in the Annual previously, is eligible. International entries are welcome. Each submission will receive consideration by every member of the jury for its category. Please be certain that the original art will be available for exhibition and can remain at the Society from January through March 2010. High-quality prints will be hung in the case of digitally created art only.

ILLUSTRATORS 52 ANNUAL BOOK

All accepted entries will be reproduced in full color in the Illustrators 52 Annual. Complete credit will accompany the image, including size, media and artist’s and/or rep’s phone number(s). The Hanging/Publication fee is required for reproduction in the book, whether or not the work was displayed in the exhibition.

AWARDS

Gold and Silver Medals will be presented to the illustrators and art directors whose works are judged the best in each category. Medals will be presented only if original art is available to hang in the exhibition. A high-quality print will qualify in case of digitally created work.

GALAS

The Sequential Gala will take place on Friday, January 8, 2010.

The Editorial and Book Gala will take place on Friday, February 5, 2010.

The Advertising, Institutional and Uncommissioned Awards Gala will take place on Friday, March 5, 2010.

CATEGORIES

All work whether published or not, should be entered in one of the first six categories:

COMICS/SEQUENTIAL
Any multi-image project for which a sequence of images is necessary to fully convey an idea or story. Examples: work that has been produced or published as comics, visual journalism or short visual narratives and picture stories, or graphic novels. Individual images from sequential may also be submitted in their respective categories. Self-published projects must be published in a run of at least 500 copies. Children’s book entries should be entered in the Book category only, not Sequential.

EDITORIAL
Examples: work commissioned by newspapers or magazines, medical and scientific journals or online magazines.

BOOK
Examples: all illustrations originally commissioned for use inside or on the covers of hardbound and paperback books, including fiction and non-fiction; children’s and young adult literature and comic books. Promotional posters or advertisements depicting book art must be submitted in the book category.

ADVERTISING
Examples: illustrations for advertisements appearing in newspapers, magazines or on television; video and CD covers; brochures, fashion, point-of-purchase and packaging illustration; movie and theater posters.

INSTITUTIONAL
Examples: work appearing on merchandise, announcements, annual reports, calendars, corporate projects, government service projects, greeting cards, newsletters, in-house publications, philatelic work and collectibles.

UNCOMMISSIONED
This includes all self-generated work such as portfolio samples, sourcebook ads and uncommissioned stock that are currently unpublished except as promotion for the artist or artist’s representative. Commissioned but un-published work appearing as self-promotion should be entered in the category for which the work was originally created. There will be no art directors or clients credited for uncommissioned works.

ENTRY FEES

$30 per entry for non-members of the Society of Illustrators.

$20 for members of the Society of Illustrators entering their own illustrations.

$35 per entry for non-members of the Society of Illustrators entering Comics/Sequential

$30 for members of the Society of Illustrators entering their own Comics/Sequential

Art directors and designers pay the non-member fees.

Call for Entries: Buckminster Fuller Challange

The Buckminster Fuller Institute announces the call for entries to the 2010 Buckminster Fuller Challenge, an annual $100,000 prize program to support the development and implementation of a solution that has significant potential to solve humanity’s most pressing problems.  Here’s the official press release:

We all understand in part or whole the magnitude of the complex challenges facing humanity today; from climate change, energy and resource management, to keeping the ever-increasing human population fed for generations to come. Challenges of this magnitude require bold, visionary strategies; they require what Buckminster Fuller called “a design revolution”. Pieces of the complex puzzle to create an enduringly sustainable future for all are out there, but it will take more than an innovative gadget, isolated technological breakthrough, policy or process development to tackle the problems of our complex and interconnected world.

“We’re looking for comprehensive anticipatory design solutions that address multiple problems without creating new ones down the road – integrated strategies dealing with key social, economic, environmental, policy and cultural issues. Our entry criteria is deeply inspired by what Fuller termed comprehensive anticipatory design science – a methodological approach to solving complex problems that we feel holds an important key to how innovators need to be thinking about the design of strategies if they are to have a transformative effect on the system as a whole.” explains Elizabeth Thompson, Executive Director of the Buckminster Fuller Institute.

After decades of tracking world resources, innovations in science and technology, and human needs, Fuller asserted that options exist to successfully surmount the crises of unprecedented scope and complexity facing all humanity – he issued an urgent call for a design science revolution to make the world work for all.

UMOVE Online Videodance Festival
October 1-31, 2009     On the web and live at select locations

Pentacle’s Movement Media announces the First Annual UMove Online Videodance Festival from October 1-31, 2009 on the web and at select screening locations across the US and around the world in 2009-10. Submission deadline is August 15, 2009.

UMove celebrates the creativity and diversity of kinetic cinema in all its forms, from dance/film to gaming, from animation to mash-ups – created for sharing on the web, on mobile devices and on ipods.

To date, the web format for dance and kinetic-based film has been under-recognized and under-valued by dance film presenters and curators.  It’s time to give these videos a platform to receive both feedback and critical praise. UMove seeks work that is strong in concept and execution, rather than sporting fancy production values or large budgets. Film-makers are free to use a variety of high and low tech media to create their work.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: August 15, 2009

If your submission is chosen you will be required to submit digital stills and a finished copy of your video on DVD (NTSC only) for screening and publicity purposes by September 15, 2009. All submissions regardless of selection will be made available for public viewing on our blog, Move the Frame.

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL

The First Annual UMove Online Videodance Festival will take place October 1-31, 2009. The festival will feature short dance and movement-based videos that were made specifically for the web and other new media formats including cell phones, gaming, virtual reality worlds, and mash-ups. In addition to online programming on YouTube and Movement Media’s blog, Move the Frame, the festival will include a launch party and live screenings in New York, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, UK, and other locations to be announced.

UMove was started by three dance film-makers: Kriota Willberg, Marta Renzi, and Anna Brady Nuse (Pentacle’s Director of Movement Media) who are passionate about promoting dance film through any means possible. We seek to find the most innovative and engaging dance videos on the web and to highlight rising talent in the field.

October 1st will mark the launch of the festival online and there will be a live screening and party in New York after which the festival will tour to select locations around the country and the world in 2009-10.

Follow-up: Camden Dunning wins the Geneva Sound System design contest

Awhile back we got the official results of the Illustrated Sound contest that Illustration students from Noel Claro’s Beyond the Page class took part in earlier this year:

The illustration students should be proud of their work – there were many positive comments left and lots of compliments. One of our favorite comments came from an executive at Bowers&Wilkins, a legendary audio manufacturer, who manages a product, the Zeppelin, that is a direct competitor of the GenevaSound Medium:

“You don’t need to enter me in the contest. I already have a Medium and we are competitors. They are all great and I thought the artist would appreciate a vote of confidence.”

Creative Briefing/Some Tips For You
Reinterpret the topic “MINIMALISM” in an artistic and philosophical way by designing a sheet for the MINI Wall Calendar 2010.

Twelve winning jury-picked designs will become part of the MINI Wall Calendar 2010 that will be available worldwide to celebrate MINIMALISM, MINI environmental initiative.

MINIMALISM is the communicative umbrella for all activities of the MINI Brand, which contribute to reducing CO2 emission and fuel consumption. MINI has made several new advancements designed to reduce environmental impact and increase fuel efficiency. MINIMALISM includes features such as aerodynamically enhanced bodies, low rolling resistant tires, light weight engines, engine stop-start features, brake energy regeneration systems, optimal shift time indicators and electronic power steering systems.

The inspiration for the name came from the Minimalism movement in various forms of art and design, especially visual art and music, where the work is stripped down to its most fundamental features.

For this special competition your designs do not have to work as a background for MINI Space, and they should not include the MINI logo. We will, however, be providing you with official MINI artwork that must be incorporated into every design. You MUST use at least one of the provided images from the “Required Silhouettes” folder. You can tease, stretch, crop, copy, colour, and otherwise alter the artwork image as long as it finds it’s way into your design in some way. It is there to serve as the foundation of your design. We have provided some other design elements that you can use as you like, they are in the “Optional Forms” folder.

Remember to use your space creatively, but this time, think about how your design could work as a stand-alone printed image. Please do not include the month name or numbers in your design. MINI will do that for you after the winners have been chosen.

The MINI Space Team and MINI Design Team will act as the jury and select the twelve winning designs. Only published designs will be awarded.

We are accepting all forms of still media, but for this competition unaltered photos will not be accepted as final designs.

Your name, country of origin, and the title of your design and description of your motive, along with a link to your MINI Space profile will be mentioned in the calendar.

To sum up:
– Create a page for the MINI Wall Calendar 2010 by interpreting the topic MINIMALISM.
– The design can be made out of any type of still media (photographic, illustration, graphic, etc.) as long as you have the rights to all design elements that you use. Remember, unaltered photographs will not be accepted as final designs.
– Designs should work as stand alone designs.
– Check out a sample of what we are looking for here.
– You must include at least one piece of official MINI artwork in your design.
– Do NOT include: Logos, Calendar numbers, Days or months

Technical Specs:
– Your first upload image should be 1280×1075 pixels in size and JPG format.
– If your design gets selected by the MINI Design Team we need your artwork in the following printable format: 500mm × 420mm, 300dpi, eps or psd files.

Prizes:

Submit your poster idea for Make Music New York!

Make Music New York, a unique, free outdoor celebration called “the largest music event ever to grace Gotham” (Metro New York), is now accepting proposals for a visual identity and urban intervention for this yearʼs festival, taking place on Sunday, June 21, 2009.

Over the last two years, Parsons students have designed the festivalʼs logo, websites, posters, and advertisements, appearing in Time Out New York, Metro New York, amNewYork, Filter Magazine, and more. This year, we are asking not only for designs to use in the media, but also for a related urban intervention, existing alongside the musicians on June 21st, who will perform on the streets, sidewalks, parks, plazas, and cemeteries of New York.

Please submit very short proposals, of no more than 2 pages (in PDF format), to makemusicny@gmail.com by April 15th. Proposals should have two parts: (1) a sketch of a poster design, and (2) a description of an urban intervention, to take place at a large number of concert locations on June 21st. There is no limit to the number of proposals you can submit.

Shortly after April 15th, the Make Music New York board of directors will choose the most promising proposal, and ask the designer to complete the poster design (by May 15th), and implement the urban intervention (by June 21st).  The chosen designer will receive recognition in our e-newsletter, press release, and websites, credit on the poster, and a check for $350.

ABOUT MAKE MUSIC NEW YORK
• All concerts take place outdoors, at 400+ locations throughout NYC on Sunday, June 21st — the first day of summer. Most musicians perform on sidewalks; many perform in parks; some close off streets.
• Every genre of music is represented, performed by amateurs and professionals of all ages. Last year there were 875 performances by NY Philharmonic musicians, high school rock bands, circuit benders, Beijing Opera companies, big bands, punk bands, bluegrass bands, and more.
• The spirit of the event is free and spontaneous, much like Halloween. Instead of stages with high production values, people just show up and play. See photos at www.makemusicny.org.

ABOUT THE POSTER
• Metro New York will print 50,000 copies of a 4-color, 15″ x 22″ poster on newsprint, and include it in the concert listings as a centerfold.
• Musicians / locations should be able to personalize the poster to promote their concerts — please leave a blank section that can be filled with individual information (see example above–made by Parsons Illustration student Jay Moreno and Nicole Fowler).
• Posters should not lead audiences to expect a particular genre of music. They should be equally suited to classical music, punk rock, jazz, hip hop, etc.
• Posters should have some clear connection with the proposed urban intervention.

ABOUT THE URBAN INTERVENTION
• The intervention should be absurdly cheap.
• It should be present at a large number of MMNY concerts, in both street/sidewalk and park spaces, and should improve the festival experience in some way.
• The intervention should relate to the poster, and tie the various MMNY concerts together visually.
• The intervention can be consistently implemented. (For example, Carlʼs Carpet Warehouse donates 3,000 square feet of red carpet; each musician picks up a piece of carpet on June 20th and uses it as a “stage” on June 21st.) Or it can be a consistent concept, implemented in different ways. (For example, artists in each neighborhood design and weave carpets for their local musicians, with a different color scheme in each borough.) In either case, describe who will carry out the project, and how.
• The intervention should be legal. If youʼre not sure, submit it anyway, along with a backup proposal. Emily Colasacco from the NYC Department of Transportation will go over all submissions and ensure compliance with NYC regulations.
