OPENING RECEPTION: 7-9PM TUESDAY 10th FEBRUARY 2009

Fresh from New York City, Jonathan Jay Lee has returned to Hong Kong to breathe new life into the local illustration scene, holding his first solo Hong Kong exhibition from February 10 to February 27 at the Fringe Gallery having worked in the U.S. for esteemed clients such as Marvel Comics.

“The illustration scene in Hong Kong is weak”, says Jonathan, “not because there aren’t a lot of creative people, but because clients aren’t willing to take risks with good ideas.” He believes that his exhibition will inspire and motivate viewers to venture into the illustrative unknown. Others agree; Singer Kary Ng, for whom Jonathan conceptualized and illustrated the Lady K comic book for, comments “Jonathan Jay Lee transformed and brought Lady K to life – one of the best artists I’ve worked with.”

Partnering with artist network Alive Not Dead, Hong Kong events organizer HK Clubbing, ultra-chrome printing specialists Giclee HK and monthly House event Opium Soul, artist Jonathan Jay Lee brings a new visual pleasure of aesthetic, with themes varying from Romance, Science Fiction, True Crime, Lonely Hearts to Zen Buddhism. “Hong Kong needs an illustrative kick in the ass,” Jonathan observes, “Let’s hope this event does just that.”

University Writing Center is moving!

The University Writing Center is moving from 65 Fifth to 71 Fifth Ave (9th floor).  The move is scheduled for Friday January 30th and we plan to be fully open and operational on Monday February 2nd.

Students can continue to make appointments using the online “e-scheduler” which can be accessed from the web site of the University Writing Center.

Faculty can continue to request in-class workshops using the workshop request form which is available from the Faculty tab on My New School.

The Writing Center is an amazing resource and everyone should take advantage of it!

Urban Interventions course still open!

Students: Still looking for a class to complete your Spring schedule?  How about one that includes art, performance, and local activism?  Look no further!  Illustration full-time faculty Ben Katchor and Parsons instructor Jim Osman will be offering a course called “Urban Interventions” and there are still slots open!  Here’s the official description from the flier above (click on it for a full-size version.):

In this studio, students will investigate possibilities of using the means and methods of public art, street art, urban play and civic activism in order to reframe and critique contemporary notions of urban revitalization and urban beautification.  Three basic methods will be used to explore these ideas.

1.    Low budget Public sculpture
2.    Street Theater/performance
3.    Pamphleteering or Print intervention

The site for student work will be 14th Street between First and Sixth Avenues.  Our studio partner will be the Union Square Partnership, a community-based, not-for-profit organization that has been a catalyst behind the neighborhood’s transition.  Students will address issues of community participation, communication, economies of scale, the impact and meaning of message in the public sphere, particularly in the context of multiple and often alienated audiences.

Through both research and art/design responses, students will develop a critical understanding of the visual landscape and roles that social imaginary plays in the complex processes of urban transformation.  Students will develop their proposals to a final stage, ready for implementation.  Our partner may implement some projects.

PUIC 2000–3 credits.  Open to Majors, non-majors, Lang and Milano students, sophomores and above.

My work is a dramatization of events caused by cultural liaisons. The drama is a cyclical tale of a power struggle between the progeny of cultural clashes. The tale examines the absurdity of the games played to secure power. The balance of power sways tenuously. Alliances are formed and players are enslaved or liberated. Comic or tragic, there is no goal other than maintaining power. Those in power define the rules of liaisons.

Great work, Eddie!  So brave the snow and head out to the show’s opening reception tomorrow, January 15th, from 6:00PM – 8:00PM.

  1. All Illustration entries, excluding books and physical volumes, should be mounted on Bristol boards with a roughly one-inch (3cm) margin.
  2. Illustrations alone will not be accepted: no fine art.
  3. For works less than 24 x 34 inches (metric A1) in size, please submit mounted originals, printed copies, proofs, reprints or tear sheets trimmed as published. Oversized entries may be represented by scaled artwork reproductions or in-situ photographs, mounted on boards.
  4. Non-English-language entries must be translated into English or have a typed English translation taped to the back of the board.
  5. For single entries, tape the printed Entry Label to the back of the board.
  6. Series entries consist of three to five (3-5) components. Please tape the printed Entry Label to the first board in the series and number the back of each board accordingly (1/3, 2/3, 3/3, etc.).
  7. Do NOT hinge, tape or “accordion” boards together.
  8. For Book categories (PH204, IL218), only commercially published volumes are accepted

Frank Gehry’s Superlight chairs given new weight at DWR’s Chelsea Studio!

A semester-long collaboration between Parsons the New School for Design, Emeco and DWR culminates with the unveiling of reimagined Frank Gehry Superlight chairs at the Chelsea Studio reception. Parsons Illustration students were challenged to redesign Gehry’s 6.5 lbs. chair. We purposely left the instructions vague, so as not to limit the students’ ideas. We placed no restrictions on materials (we encouraged mixed media) or concepts (we challenged them to think about the usefulness of the chair, the human form, social conventions, style and culture). The designs are as diverse as the students who created them. You are invited to discuss the results with Parsons Illustration chair Steven Guarnaccia, Emeco representatives, DWR’s own Bradford Shellhammer and the student-creators themselves. Snacks and wine will be served.

Editor’s Note: Come out and support all the great Illustration students (and their fantastic instructor, Noel Claro) who worked on this!

Uglycon 3 at Giant Robot New York tomorrow!

Giant Robot is proud to host the third annual Uglydoll convention at GRNY.

In 2001, Sun-Min Kim (Parsons Illustration Alum) turned a drawing on the bottom of letters from David Horvath (Parsons Illustration Alum) into a hand-sewn doll. It was Wage, the first Uglydoll ever. After David brought the piece to the newly opened Giant Robot store, it evolved into a toy with a rabid following – selling out at shops around the world, appearing in movies, creating spin-offs, spawning bootlegs, and inspiring a new wave of stuffed plushes.

This year’s art show offerings will include original paintings by Sun-Min, black-and-white drawings by David, and print-and-drawing sets from Uglycon Tokyo. Also available for purchase will be rare toys such as test samples from past lines, signed prototypes, and “test shots” of kaiju figures.

In the tradition of the first two Uglycons, there will be costume contest in which fans are asked to dress up as their favorite Uglydoll. Winners chosen by David and Sun-Min will receive a bounty of prizes.

And there will be even more, including a sneak peek at a never-before-seen Uglydoll for 2009.

The first two Uglycons caused an online buzz and attracted fans from around the country and overseas. We expect the New York occasion to be even bigger. To facilitate demand and eliminate uncomfortable lineups, raffle tickets for making purchases will be handed out beginning at 12:00 noon. Starting at 3:00, these tickets will be drawn to determine the order of sales.

The opening reception will begin tomorrow at 12:00 noon on Saturday, December 6.

Job Posting: Assistant Professor in Illustration

The School of Art, Media and Technology (AMT) at Parsons The New School for Design is seeking applicants for a full-time renewable term appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in Illustration starting Fall 2009. Successful applicants must hold terminal degrees in their respective fields and/or equivalent professional standing, and must demonstrate a strong record of excellence in teaching and scholarship/creative work. This position is dependent on budget approval from the Office of the Provost.

The successful candidate for this position will be an illustrator who has a deep knowledge and interest in the history of the field, as well as its present manifestations, and who has a demonstrable background in teaching visual thinking and technique and has experience in a variety of areas in the illustration field. This individual will teach independently and as a member of teams in core illustration seminars and studios; will be an instructor and/or coordinator of special collaborative projects with the for-profit and non-profit sectors; will work closely with the School’s leadership to define and implement the illustration department¹s mission across its curriculum; will develop and assist in the implementation of new curriculum; will facilitate and enhance connections and relationships between and among other disciplines within the School for Art, Media and Technology at Parsons and the New School University; and will strengthen connections and relationships among sophomore, junior and senior level curricula.

This individual will also take part in a team that will develop graduate programs in Illustration. Through an immersion in technical expertise, processes, aesthetic considerations and proactive social engagement, Parsons¹ Illustration cultivates the technical skills and intellectual habits essential to imaginatively explore and responsibly integrate the swiftly expanding roles of a successful professional Illustrator.
