We are pleased to extend an invitation to visit Parsons Illustration to view CRY UNCLE, by Francis Jetter.
If you are not familiar with the work of Frances Jetter you will find this art engaging in many ways.
The work is a 23 page accordion fold book that Frances wrote, designed and illustrated. The 18″ x 24″ images are impeccably printed from linoleum cuts, on translucent, handmade, Japanese paper. The content is truly compelling; a graphic account describing and addressing the horror of torture through a political lens. By all accounts, and certainly in my humble opinion, it is an aesthetically stunning and impassioned piece. It challenges us on an intellectual and visceral level and shares the beautiful tactile mastery of her medium.
Given the recent interest and proliferation of exhibitions throughout the New School University and the city offering variations on sequential narrative straddling both the fine art and the communications fields, this work has the exceptional qualities that enable it to rest comfortably in both realms.
Editions of this book (limited to 15) have been acquired by various notable institutions, among them, The New York Public Library.
Frances Jetter is an alumna from Parsons and has maintained a highly distinguished profile in the communications field for three decades.

Some of you may have heard Nathan’s story in the news. He and his wife were diagnosed with advanced forms of cancer virtually simultaneously, and they have an 18- month-old daughter.

Hi Everyone,
I am organizing a benefit auction for Nathan and Elisa Bond. For those of you who do not know their story, please see below. There are links to articles and videos that tell all. Nathan teaches painting in the Illustration Program and drawing in the Foundation Program.
I am looking for artists to donate a work for this cause. All works collected will be featured in an exhibition for one night (May 10) at Flux Factory in Brooklyn. Here is the format for the auction: There will be one ticket sold for each work collected. Purchasing a ticket guarantees you will receive a work in the show. When the auction begins, the holder of the first ticket number pulled randomly will be allowed first choice of the show. We will then proceed drawing tickets until all works in the show are claimed. Ticket prices are yet to be determined, but will be approximately $200-$250. Works are taken home as they are chosen. We will have volunteers on hand during the choosing
of the works to collect contact info to be made available to each artist on who chose their work.
I have been asking many of you in person as I see you if you would be willing to donate a work for this auction. I currently have about 40 commitments and I thank you all. My goal however is to bring this number to between 100-150 so if you would like to participate, or know of another artist who could donate a work, I would appreciate knowing as soon as possible. I need to have the art collected and accounted for in order to sell tickets, and as I am sure you can imagine, preparing for a show of this magnitude will not be easy in such a short amount of time.
If you have already committed to donating a work to this auction or would like to, please send an email to toddlambrix@gmail.com. Please include a current Bio, Artist statement, and or CV to be printed and made available at the show, the name of the work, medium, dimensions, and date the work was made. I will respond to you with directions for delivering the work. We intend to hang the works at the show in the most appropriate manner possible. If your piece requires special handling, hanging instructions or hardware, please be sure to detail this in the email. Please keep in mind that people should be able to leave the night of May 10th with their collected work with relative
ease. We cannot leave anything in the gallery space past the night of the reception.
I would also like to request that you share this story with artists within your professional circles and see if they are interested in donating a work for this show. Please pass along my email to them or send me theirs so that I may get in touch.
As with any opening or gallery reception, all are invited to attend and I hope that you will spread the word so that we can have a supportive turnout. Flux Factory is located at: 39-31 29th Street, Long Island City, Queens. Again, the event will be held on May 10, 2011 from 5:00-8:00pm Auction will begin promptly at 6:15.

Rima Fujita (Illustration, ’87) dropped us a line about an upcoming event featuring her work! Here’s the scoop:
My 4th book, “Save the Himalaya” (forewords by the Dalai Lama and Richard Gere) will be published this fall, and I will be donating a few thousand copies to 82 Tibetan refugee schools in exile. I am having a charity exhibition event at Sundaram Tagore Gallery in Beverly Hills. I would like to invite you to the special opening on April 29 (ed. note: click the link for more information!) if you are in LA area that day.“Save the Himalaya” is an educational book about the crisis of the Himalayan environment, and Mr. Tagore and I are donating all proceed to educating Tibetan children in exile about the environmental issue.
Riverside gallery is pleased to announce NY based Artist (and Parsons Illustration Alum) Soo Kim’s first solo exhibition called “Allegory of Objects”.
In this body of work, she is showing new paintings of representative abstract style. Her recent work has become more abstract compared to her past paintings, which were more like paintings that are like drawings. She uses combination and contrast of vibrant and pastel colors, irregular patterns and brush strokes to create the melancholy mood and settings of the whole series.
The focus of “Allegory of Objects” series is about how object can bring out memories from past and resonate sense of a person and how the objects can have different meanings to different groups of people. There are conventional meanings, personal meanings for people who used to own the object, and for those who knew the person who originally owned the object, and the personal history.
Soo Kim observes how the objects imply assumptions about the characters in the first place, and how people would react when they found out their perception and guesses were wrong.
Born and raised in Seoul, Korea, Soo Kim lived briefly for a year in Missouri, while she was attending Jr. high school. During that time, she had road trips of traveling all over the country with her family. She came to New York in 1999, and has been living and working in NY since then. She earned BFA from Parsons School of Design (2006-2008) studying Illustration and Fine Art, and holds another BFA degree in Design from Fashion Institute of Technology (1999-2003). Her art studio is located in Dumbo, Brooklyn, where she works on paintings and drawings.

The MoCCA Festival will take place over April 9-10, 2011 at the Lexington Avenue Armory located at 68 Lexington Avenue between 25th and 26th Streets. The event attracts thousands of comic art lovers and creators from around the globe to celebrate the world’s most popular art form in the heart of New York City. Since 2002 the MoCCA Festival offers a unique venue to experience comics, mini-comics, web comics, graphic novels, animation, posters, prints, original artwork and more. Each year, the Festival invites dozens of established and emerging creators, scholars, and other experts to participate in two days of lecture/discussion panels on a variety of comics and cartoon topics. In conjunction with guest curators Mark Todd and Esther Pearl Watson, Giant Robot is proud to host Power Punch.
For this show, artists were given identical 8″ x 8″ panels to work from. As a result, the art itself becomes the focus–and not the material it is created on. The unified presentation will explore both the vocabulary of and connections between today’s working artists.
Artists, who were chosen not only on the merit of their own particular work but also how they relate to one another, will include the following:

The Society of Illustrators proudly presents “R. Crumb: Lines Drawn on Paper,” an exhibition of original artwork spanning the past four decades.
This 90-piece exhibit showcases seminal covers and interior pages from ZAP, HEAD COMIX, THE EAST VILLAGE OTHER, MOTOR CITY COMICS, BIG ASS, HOMEGROWN FUNNIES, SAN FRANCISCO COMICS, and much, much more.
This retrospective, curated by BLAB! magazine founder Monte Beauchamp, editor of The Life & Times of R. Crumb (St. Martin’s Press), presents key pieces culled from the private art collection of Eric Sack, with contributions from John Lautemann, Paul Morris, and David Zwirner.
Both R. Crumb and Aline Kominsky-Crumb will be attending the show.

Sloan Fine Art is pleased to host “Single Fare 2: Please Swipe Again” a very special exhibition of works on used NYC MetroCards with a portion of the proceeds to benefit Transportation Alternatives (transalt.org) and Alliance for the Arts’ NYC ARTS (NYC-ARTS.org). In May 2010, Artists Jean-Pierre Roy and Michael Kagan hosted an unusual exhibition in their Brooklyn studio. Open to all artists who wanted to participate, “Single Fare” placed one constraint on the creative process: all work had to be submitted on a used MetroCard. Inspired by the notion that the city’s subways and buses allow for a kind of creative interchange unmatched in human history, “Single Fare” sought to create a unique art event where art and artists could come together to form a monumental event made from a tiny, innocuous piece of plastic: The MetroCard! The resulting exhibition featured over 700 works of art – from artists as far away as New Zealand and as close as the studio next door.
Following the tremendous success of last year’s “Single Fare,” Roy and Kagan team up with Sloan Fine Art on the Lower East Side for “Single Fare 2: Please Swipe Again.” The themes of last year’s show ran the gamut from moments of high abstraction to delicate portraiture. Three-dimensional works, documentary photography and even a video installation helped to create one of the most cohesively diverse shows in recent memory while playfully challenging artists to show what they can do with seven square inches.
While serving as a democratizing vehicle for artists of all ages and disciplines, the Single Fare exhibition also served as a fantastic platform to introduce beginning collectors to an amazing array of work while inviting the committed collector to connect to artists that might normally fall under their radar. Partnering with Sloan Fine Art represents an exciting step forward for the Single Fare experience, allowing the exhibition to remain true to its roots while benefitting from additional exhibition days and regular gallery hours.
Several Parsons Illustration students, alumni and faculty participated in this exhibition including: Jordin Isip (f), Ana Mouyis (’09), Garrett Pruter (’10), Victoria Salvador (’11), Stephanie Tartick (’11), Katie Turner (’10), Zachary Zezima (’09).
Additionally, a handful of artists have been recruited to create Single Fare works that will be raffled off with proceeds to benefit two worthy charities – Transportation Alternatives (transalt.org), promoting New York City’s continued commitment to public and alternative forms of transportation and Alliance for the Arts’ NYC Arts (nyc-arts.org), the leading Web and free iPhone guide to arts programs and events throughout NYC. Raffle tickets will be available beginning at 5pm the night of the reception and winners will be announced at 8:30pm sharp.
