OCT. 9 Sat. 9-6pm A IS FOR ANANSI: LITERATURE FOR CHILDREN OF AFRICAN DESCENT A Is For Anansi will cover the history, criticism and theory of contemporary books for and about children of African descent, as told by its most influential critics, scholars, teachers and producers. The need for more in-depth analysis and for more information, critical evaluation, and publications on this topic still remain. The conference will look at these and consider other questions and issues as well. Speakers include LEO & DIANE DILLON (Parsons Illustration Alums), ARNOLD ADOFF, KAMILI FEELINGS, GEORGE FORD, ZETTA ELLIOTT, and MICHAEL PATRICK HEARN among others.

Oct. 9 Sat. 2pm NYPL CHILDREN’S LITERARY CAFE discusses The Authors Guild, SCBWI and PEN. Join moderator BETSY BIRD for a look at three prominent organizations for authors and illustrators. With a slew of different organizations to consider joining what do these organizations offer their members? (Illustration Adjunct Faculty) PAT CUMMINGS of the Authors Guild, SUSANNA REICH of PEN, and VICKI WITTENSTEIN of SCBWI will discuss what benefits their organizations provide and the good works they do in the community and the world. Oct. 12 Thurs. 7:30-9:30 p.m. SOCIETY OF CHILDREN’S BOOK ILLUSTRATORS AND WRITERS (SCBWI): Twenty-Five* Revision Techniques. CHERYL KLEIN, Senior Editor at Arthur Levine Books and author of the blog Brooklyn Arden will talk about twenty-five* techniques that writers can use to revise their manuscripts.

A Gallery Talk with Tomer Hanuka, Yuko Shimizu and Sam Weber

BLOW UP: Hanuka, Shimizu, Weber

Three illustrators from vastly different backgrounds; Canada, Japan and Israel; meeting at the crossroads of a distinct American esthetic to examine their new found artistic voices through personal mythologies, broken narratives and remixed identities. An open window into the visual melting pot of contemporary image making.

Sam Weber’s monumental and moody figures draw on the western idea of the portrait, re-imagined for the modern age, where anxiety and wonder mix into a seamless dramatic whole imbued with a sense of unsolved mystery.

Yuko Shimizu’s playful imagery ties the surface of Japanese wood cut prints with contemporary issues, creating sophisticated and symbolic psychological scenes of internal worlds, broken by geometric contraption that seem to pull away and reconnect the disparate elements.

Tomer Hanuka’s visuals were developed as research for an upcoming graphic novel titled The Divine to be published by First Second (written by Boaz Lavie and pencilled by Asaf Hanuka). the images explore ideas of eternal childhood, drawing from sources like 8bit video games, Rambo and hard news.

Gallery Talk on September 25th at 4 p.m.
Spend an afternoon with these artists as they discuss their work and techniques in an informal setting.

American Artifact: The Rise of American Rock Poster Art is the story of one of America’s truest folk art forms, the rock poster. The film explores the history/rise of the current rock poster movement in America, and features a cast of quirky/interesting, and extremely talented rock poster artists talking about what inspired their work, and telling the story of their underground art movement. It features interviews with renown artists as well as fans, collectors, and musicians.

Blab! A Retrospective opens at Society of Illustrators on March 26th

BLAB!, founded in 1986 by Monte Beauchamp, is a periodic anthology featuring work by some of the world’s brightest artists, illustrators, and printmakers.

Join us in this celebration.

BLAB!, a periodic anthology of visual art, was founded by Chicago-based graphic designer and art director Monte Beauchamp in 1986. Characterized by an emphasis on comics, the first seven issues of BLAB! were produced in a digest-sized format (5½” x 8½”), printed in black-and-white with a color cover, and contained illustrated stories by such figures as Joe Coleman, Charles Burns, Daniel Clowes, Drew Friedman, Chris Ware, and ZAP artist Spain Rodriguez.

In 1995, after a three year hiatus, the eighth issue of BLAB! appeared with a redesigned format and a significant shift in editorial focus. It was square (10″ x 10″), included 4-color printing on the interior, and featured a cover commissioned from the then relatively unknown Chris Ware, now a renowned comic artist. Ware’s impeccably drawn cover design and tag line, “Liberating Art from Quality,” heralded BLAB!’s new direction. Beauchamp significantly reduced the number of prose pieces, featured fewer comics artists, and invited illustrators such as Gary Baseman, Christian Northeast, The Clayton Brothers, Jonathon Rosen and Mark Ryden to contribute. He also featured selections of vintage “found” graphics such as depression-era matchbook covers, Valmor cosmetic labels, and European devil postcards. Though it has continued to reflect Beauchamp’s passion for storytelling, BLAB!‘s character is resolutely visual. Each year he invites approximately twenty-five visual artists from the fields of sequential art, graphic design, illustration, painting, and printmaking to contribute to BLAB!, a selection informed by Beauchamp’s distinctive vision and aesthetic.

Today BLAB! is acclaimed as a highly influential periodical of visual art and as a venue for work by some of the world’s brightest artists, illustrators, and printmakers.

BIO:
Monte Beauchamp is an award-winning art director/graphic designer whose work has appeared in Graphis, Communication Arts, SPDA, Print, American Illustration, and The Society of Illustrators Annual. He has received numerous awards and honors, and has served as a juror forAmerican Illustration and The Society of Illustrators.

He is the founder and editor of the graphics-illustration-comics annualBLAB! His books include: The Life & Times of R. Crumb (St. Martin’s Press), Striking Images: Vintage Matchbook Cover Art (Chronicle Books),The Devil in Design (Fantagraphics), and New & Used BLAB! (Chronicle Books).

He is the founder, editor, and designer of BLAB! Picto-Novelettes – a series of story books presented in a faux-children’s book format for adults. Titles include: Sheep of Fools by Sue Coe and Judith Brody, Old Jewish Comedians by Drew Friedman, The Magic Bottle by Camille Rose Garcia,Struwwelpeter by Bob Staake, and SHAG: A to Z.

Annual Exhibition: Illustrators 52 Book & Editorial Reception tonight!

The Society of Illustrators presents the “Annual Exhibition: Illustrators 52– Book and Editorial” on Friday, February 5th, 6 pm.

This show is part of a three-part exhibition featuring works from leading contemporary illustrators worldwide. Selected from more than 4,600 submissions by a panel of renowned illustrators and art directors, 417 images by today’s foremost illustrators and animators will be on view from January 6 to March 20 in the museum’s galleries in New York City’s Upper East Side. Each reception will feature Awards and Certificate Ceremonies and refreshments, and is open to the public.

Tickets are $30 for members, $35 for non-members and $20 for students.
