Quick Hit: Sketch Night at the Bodies exhibit

bodies-sketch-signSKETCH NIGHT program was created to give artists unfettered access to The BODIES galleries in order to explore the possibilities and practice their mastery of human anatomy drawing. SKETCH NIGHTS are held after regular operating hours (7:00 PM – 10:00 PM) allowing artists to set up easels or bring chairs to help facilitate their work. Dry media only.  On April 29th, artist John Cichowski will be our special guest!

Attendance at SKETCH is restricted to artists only. Space is limited.

Artists must arrive at 7:00 PM sharp. Latecomers cannot be accommodated. Group rates (+20) available.

International Ideas Competition: Grand Concourse at 100

The Bronx Museum of the Arts in partnership with Design Trust for Public Space launched Intersections: The Grand Concourse Beyond 100, an international ideas competition. Open to all, the competition solicits bold visions from architects, planners, artists, designers, students, area residents, and others, that illustrate and describe how the Bronx and the Grand Concourse can evolve in coming decades to cope with pressing needs for housing, green space, and transportation.

Up to 7 finalists will be awarded a $1,000 cash stipend to further develop their proposal for inclusion in the exhibition–Intersections: The Grand Concourse at 100 – Future at The Bronx Museum of the Arts, opening Nov. 1, 2009. A $5,000 first prize will be awarded to one of the seven finalists at the exhibit’s opening. Honorable Mentions will be awarded to up to 50 submissions, and will be displayed digitally during the exhibit in the Museum’s North Wing Lobby and also in an online gallery on the competition website.

Competition entries will be accepted until May 1, 2009 and judged by diverse and distinguished jury.

By 2030, New York City is projected to grow by over one million residents, and 124,000 will settle in the Bronx — the equivalent of the entire population of Ann Arbor, Michigan, or New Haven, Connecticut. With this substantial population growth on the horizon, recent robust investment in development, and the Grand Concourse’s centennial, now is the time to look at what the Bronx and its important thoroughfare will become beyond 100.

In addition to application details, the website hosts extensive information about the Bronx and the Grand Concourse, including a slideshow of historic images, a video about the history of the Concourse, many current and historic maps, demographic data, recommended books and movies, and more.

David Polonsky at Society of Illustrators

Tuesday, March 3rd at 6:30 at The Society of Illustrators (128 East 63rd) meet David Polonsky, the illustrator and art director of Ari Forman’s Waltz with Bashir. Polonsky will discuss the techniques that were used to make this unique animated documentary. The talk will be accompanied by clips from the film. A Q and A session will follow and a book signing for the release of a graphic novel based upon the film.

$10 members, $15 non-members.

On Saturday, February 21, the NYIH will delve back into the roots of the modern Humanities in the sixteenth century’s Age of Marvels, when the sorts of disciplines that would eventually separate out into distinct Arts and the Sciences, as currently understood, still comingled promiscuously and sometimes well-nigh deliriously.  For, as the curator of the day-long event, Lawrence Weschler (director of the Institute and the author, among others, of the Pulitzer-nominated Mr. Wilson’s Cabinet of Wonders and the NBCC-Award-winning Everything that Rises: A Book of Convergences) suggests, what with the expansion of the Web, the Net, and other such proliferating technologies, our current era is witnessing a similarly happy debauch of interpenetrating categories, a time when scientists and artists, fictionaros and filmmakers and historians and digital innovators all have a whole lot to say to each other.

Frank Gehry’s Superlight chairs given new weight at DWR’s Chelsea Studio!

A semester-long collaboration between Parsons the New School for Design, Emeco and DWR culminates with the unveiling of reimagined Frank Gehry Superlight chairs at the Chelsea Studio reception. Parsons Illustration students were challenged to redesign Gehry’s 6.5 lbs. chair. We purposely left the instructions vague, so as not to limit the students’ ideas. We placed no restrictions on materials (we encouraged mixed media) or concepts (we challenged them to think about the usefulness of the chair, the human form, social conventions, style and culture). The designs are as diverse as the students who created them. You are invited to discuss the results with Parsons Illustration chair Steven Guarnaccia, Emeco representatives, DWR’s own Bradford Shellhammer and the student-creators themselves. Snacks and wine will be served.

Editor’s Note: Come out and support all the great Illustration students (and their fantastic instructor, Noel Claro) who worked on this!

Transfluence–Carol Peligian at MOBIA

Illustration Part-time faculty member Carol Peligian has a show up at the Museum of Biblical Art called Transfluence.  Here’s the official description:

Transfluence brings together familiar visual forms – paintings, drawings, and sculpture – to concentrate on a subject beyond our experience. Two- and three-dimensional images pose questions essential to an inquiry that crosses cultures, on the nature of grace. They appear to reference forms we know, yet when juxtaposed, intertwined, or fully melded with their opposites, each is not neutralized but intensified, and a new order is indicated. Is what we see corporeal or spiritual; actual or evanescent; beautiful or terrible; a whisper, a touch, or an irrestistible, consuming force? The effects of time and transformation are both implied and directly evident in the images, as external and inherent color and light change as we observe, and as figure and ground vie for dominance. We are unsure if the implied time is measured in milliseconds or millennia, or if the transformations will lead to successful outcomes or dead ends. The surface of each art work reflects its viewers, and it is our recognition and questioning of the elements present that create meaning, as a conscientious observation of natural forms will do. But are these natural forms, or are nature and our experience only the beginning? What will the inquiry do to us in terms of time and transformation, and what can we discover of grace, within and without?

Transfluence is on view through January 18, 2009. There will be a “Meet the Artist” event this week on Thursday, November 20th from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Choose from among more than 1,000 original works on paper by hundreds of emerging and acclaimed artists at this signature event to benefit ARTISTS SPACE’s dynamic, artists-centered programming!

Participating artists already include Nathan Carter, Willie Cole, Stefan Kürten, Robert Longo, and Kate Shepherd

PROCEDURE FOR SUBMISSIONS

Artists Space will accept up to two unframed, unmatted works on paper from any individual artist.
Works must be NO LARGER than 11 x 14 inches.
Photographs and digital prints are acceptable as long as they are the original media, i.e, no digital reproductions of paintings, etc.

On the back of each work, write your name, address, and email address. NO Post-It notes, please.

For the return of unsold work, Include a self-addressed, stamped envelope.  Please be sure the envelope is of adequate size and has the proper postage.

IF YOU DO NOT INCLUDE A SELF-ADDRESSED, STAMPED ENVELOPE AND THE WORK DOES NOT SELL, IT WILL NOT BE RETURNED TO YOU.

You will receive a thank you letter and notification of sale by March, 2009.

BEAUTIFUL LOSERS celebrates the spirit behind one of the most influential cultural moments of a generation.

In the early 1990’s a loose-knit group of likeminded outsiders found common ground at a little NYC storefront gallery. Rooted in the DIY (do-it-yourself) subcultures of skateboarding, surf, punk, hip hop & graffiti, they made art that reflected the lifestyles they led. Developing their craft with almost no influence from the “establishment” art world, this group, and the subcultures they sprang from, have now become a movement that has been transforming pop culture.

Starring a selection of artists who are considered leaders within this culture, Beautiful Losers focuses on the telling of personal stories. It speaks to themes of what happens when the outside becomes “in” as it explores the creative ethos connecting these artists and today’s youth.
