Illustration student Katie Turner recently designed the above for Parade of One. Here’s the mission statement for the group:

Parade of One, Inc. is an arts oriented company, currently awaiting its 501c3 legal status as a nonprofit organization. The company’s primary purpose is to focus on the unlikely ideas that originate in the back of the creative person’s mind. We don’t want to throw away these ideas for their lack of feasibility or their absurdity. We want to take these ideas very seriously and try to make them happen.

Founder Jeremy Danneman dislikes drawing distinctions between art that promotes positive social change and art for its own sake. Parade of One, Inc. promotes both. There are numerous ways to be creative in manners that interact positively with the wold, and Parade of One, Inc. supports them all.

Audiences, performers, and artists will all benefit from our activities. Too often, creative minds are crippled by a lack of funding, when just a little money will open the doors for them to change the world. Meanwhile, audiences are left thirsty for original music, art, theater, and film that seeks, not so much, to profit its sponsors, but to benefit the greater community. Parade of One, Inc. seeks not only to find the funding for creative ideas, but also to provide a forum for the discussion and promotion of such ideas.

“The Immersion of the Senses,” by Parsons Illustration Alum Bonnie Gloris, appears in the May issue of Brain Topography,  A Journal of Cerebral Function and Dynamics. The oil painting, which depicts the five boroughs of New York City,  each representing a sensory organ, illustrates the journal’s preface. This special issue was widely distributed at the International Multisensory Research Forum’s 10th annual conference in New York this past June 29 – July 2, 2009.

The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund proudly presents Conversational Comics: a new summer speaker series taking place on three separate Saturday afternoons at Union Pool in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Please join us for lively panel discussions with artists currently changing the face of comics, all moderated by comics critic (and Parsons Illustration Adjunct) Bill Kartalopoulos. Then stick around to get a book signed, hit the taco truck, and sip a summer drink with our featured cartoonists.

The event takes place at 2:00 pm in the back room at Union Pool. Union Pool is located at 484 Union Ave., Brooklyn, NY 11211, one block from the Lorimer-Metropolitan G and L stop.

Lines on Paper: Drawing and Cartooning

Austin English (Windy Corner, Christina and Charles), Lisa Hanawalt (Stay Away From Other People, I Want You), and Dash Shaw (Bottomless Belly Button, Bodyworld) will discuss the relationship between image-making and drawing for comics. How do pictures work differently in comics than they do on gallery walls?

Suggested donation is $5. All proceeds go to benefit the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund.

Bill Kartalopoulos teaches classes about comics and illustration at Parsons. He is a Contributing Editor at Print Magazine, where he frequently writes about comics.

The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund was founded in 1986 as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of First Amendment rights for members of the comics community.

Alumni and industry friends are invited to join Peter de Seve ’80 (Ice Age) and R. Sikoryak ’87 (Masterpiece Comics) for cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and conversation in San Diego. The event will take place on Saturday, July 25th from 6:00-9:00 p.m. at the Rock Bottom Brewery- Downtown Lounge.

R. Sikoryak is the author of Masterpiece Comics (Drawn & Quarterly),“where classics and cartoons collide.” He’s drawn comics and pictures for Nickelodeon Magazine, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, The New Yorker, The
Onion, and Mad, among other media giants. In his spare time, he hosts the cartoon slide show series Carousel.

Peter de Sève’s illustration and character designs are known throughout the world. Best recognized for his many New Yorker covers and his character designs for the three blockbuster Ice Age movies (“Scrat” is now an
international icon) de Seve has also contributed to such films as Mulan, A Bug’s Life, Tarzan and Finding Nemo.

CHILDREN’S BOOKS FOR RECONSTRUCTION
Rebuilding life after the earthquakes
A project to help the central Italian region of Abruzzo

On April 6, 2009, in the middle of the night, an earthquake hit the central Italian region of Abruzzo. The majority of the damage occurred in the medieval city of L’Aquila (capital city of the Abruzzo region) and the 26 surrounding villages. L’Aquila and most of the villages were almost totally erased. In the earthquake 397 people died, including more than 20 children, and thousands were critically injured. The earthquake left more than 70,000 people without homes. Right now most of the people are being housed in temporary camps.

IBBY Italia, the Italian section of the International Board on Books for Young People, is promoting a project to help Abruzzo rebuild its life and future.

The project aims to realize two different levels of experience. The first level is organizing professional volunteers who specialize in children’s books and boardgames to hold readings, workshops, and meetings for children and families affected by the earthquake.  Following the immediate emergency, the project is collecting books from publishers in order to build a youth library in the area hit by the eartquake.  During the reconstruction IBBY is working with a local committee to promote a calendar of events, readings, and game sessions, bringing a public Bibliobus, a mobile library, to the area where people are now living in five main tent camps.

The project plans to be present in the area during the long period of reconstruction, and to organize meetings with authors, illustrators and specialists during the coming years in schools. The goal is to help the local community to rebuild its structure, energy, and hope in order to reinvent its future.  In order to make all this happen, IBBY Italia*, with the support of the Minister of Cultural and Artistic Heritage  and in collaboration with the local committee calls for the help of all of those who wants to contribute to this project.

MoCCA Follow-Up Week: Christine Young

Editor’s Note: This week, we are featuring three entries by students who worked at the Parson’s Illustration tables at the MoCCA Festival this past June.  Our final narrative installment is by newly minted Illustration Alum, Christine Young.

The MoCCA Fest was so much funnnn! Even though it was really hot in there and I felt like I was about to pass out by the end of it, I would have gladly done so because it was such a great experience seeing a bunch of great art, comics, zines and shirts and meeting cool artists and people from all around the world all under one huge roof! Our Parsons Illustration table had a lot of great prints, books and zines by our fellow students (ya’ll rule), and we sold a bunch too! Among those who were there repping our department were: Beryl Chung, Sophia Chang, Katie Turner, Grace Lang, Sydney Seltzer, Kevin Lee, and Steven Guarnaccia.

Along with selling and trading, I did alot of buying cuz it’s really hard not to cuz of all the amazing things, which was very overwhelming, in the best way possible. I was running around like a school kid after lunch. There were Parsons teachers there too at their own tables such as Neil Swaab, Nora Krug and Tara McPherson selling mad stuff, ya know, no big. And, there were guest lectures by artists such as Adrian Tomine and Gary Panter who were signing stuff all day. Sophia got Adrian to sign her a poster and book, and he did a really cool doodle and I was jealous.

And soooo to sum it up, by the end of the day I went home from Mocca a very happy person with a bag full of awesome comics, zines, shirts and most importantly, a brand new list of art crushes.

Dime Bag 3 at Giant Robot featuring tons of Illustration Alums/Faculty/Students

Giant Robot is proud to host a tiny exhibition of colossal proportions curated by artists Jordin Isip and Rodger Stevens.

Dime Bag 3 is the ninth in an ongoing series of events by Isip and Stevens, bringing together over 200 artists from New York City and beyond representing an extraordinary variety of disciplines. Painters, illustrators, graphic designers, filmmakers, photographers, product designers, and others have been invited to create artworks specifically designed to be exhibited in 3-inch plastic bags: dime bags. Each artist was sent one of the symbolic baggies and asked to fill it in any way they wished.
