Artist Statement:

I’m interested in the body; the body in an atmosphere and the idea of the gaze. My inspiration stems from my personal life, people I’ve met, sub-cultures, and games/film. I like to create moods in my work,whether it’s humorous, blissful, or a melancholic longing. I’m also interested in character, fantasy, and personal nostalgia. Primarily, I work digitally and with ink.

Artist Statement:

Heavily influenced by the ’70s, music, film, and youth culture, my work is about celebrating youth and it’s ephemeral nature. Conceptually, the passage of time and the unique make-up of one’s nostalgia are important to me. I want to portray a vivid, overwhelming period that young people go through in their lives; a feeling of lostness and a dazed, out of state mind. I utilize candy colored extreme fluorescents alongside homoerotic imagery to capture and admire youth at its most extreme. Most of my work is done in acrylic, but I will also sometimes use graphite, glitter, or digital media.

Your Art Could Be Anne Hathaway’s Co-Star!

General Info

Song One Productions is looking for artwork to decorate a townhouse (presumedly belonging to Anne Hathaway’s character) for the film, “Song One.” They will not be able to compensate you for your work, but just imagine…Anne Hathaway fans will gaze up at your artwork on the silver screen, or on flatscreens from the comfort of their sofas for years to come!

There will also be selected screenings of shorts in the Bark Room on Thursday night, and for the length of the show (May 9th-May 24th) there will be programming in the gallery to include student performances, presentations and workshops hosted in the Kellen Gallery space.

Middle-Schoolers and Families:  Experiment with Interaction Design! Make Cool Gadgets! Turn Trash to Treasure! The purpose of this multigenerational workshop, for kids ages 10-14 and their families, is to prototype your own interactive artifacts. You will tinker with electronics using a simple, safe device called The NoiseMaker.  No previous experience with engineering or computer programming necessary!  We will use electricity to make delightful contraptions that make wonderful sounds and light up.  Bring discarded electronic devices, plastic toys, and boxes that open and close, as well as recyclables such as egg cartons and plastic bottles.  (Materials will also be provided.) GadgITERATION is for anyone interested in any of the following: Electronics, Product Design, Sustainability, Making.  Created just for you by Parsons designers in the AMT Design and Technology Program!

Artist Statement:

My work looks at the relationship between nature and man. Depending on how the audience perceives it, my work can be viewed as abstract or representational. I enjoy making images with strong impressions of colour, even if the imagery or concepts may appear disturbing to viewers. In my illustrations, I like to use a multitude of media, such as, watercolor, graphite, charcoal, conte, as well as lithographic printing techniques.

Artists – Know Your Rights Before You Consign!

If you want your work sold in galleries, you’d better know your rights, first! Don’t miss “Understanding Artists’ Rights in Dealer Relationships” on May 29th from 6:30-8:00 p.m. in Kellen Auditorium, presented by The Parsons Institute for Intellectual Property (PiiP), in partnership with the Art Law Committee of the New York City Bar Association.

Recent events, such as the bankruptcy of the Salander-O’Reilly Galleries, have highlighted the need for artists to protect their ownership rights in works of art they consign to galleries for sale, and to be especially vigilant in ensuring that they receive a timely accounting and the proceeds from the sale of their consigned works.  The panel will address how artists may best protect their interests through a written agreement, and how certain rights and remedies are conferred upon artists in the New York State Arts and Cultural Affairs Law.  An agreement is an important tool for clearly setting forth the rights and obligations of an artist and her dealer.  It also enables the parties to manage their expectations as they enter into a relationship.  The NY Arts and Cultural Affairs Law applies to dealers and artists in New York regardless of whether they have an express agreement, but it addresses only some of the parties’ rights and obligations.

Points to be discussed will include:

  • What terms should be included in an artist/dealer agreement?
  • What rights does an artist have when a gallery sells an artist’s work of art and fails to deliver the sale proceeds to the artist?
  • Are there any tools available to alleviate the substantial legal fees an artist might have to incur to enforce his or her rights?

The panel will be comprised of attorneys who are members of the Art Law Committee:

Michael Lee Hertzberg has maintained a law practice in Manhattan for the past thirty-five years that has included the representation of visual artists, art galleries, private dealers and collectors concerning transactional matters and litigation.

Dean Nicyper is a Partner at the law firm Flemming Zulack Williamson Zauderer LLP, and heads the Art Law practice there.  He has worked with auction houses, galleries, museums, artists, collectors and dealers in art-related disputes and transactions for more than 17 years.

Joshua Lipsman, (JD, MD) will be the panel moderator.

Artist Statement:

I believe to be an artist is to be an efficient problem solver. To be a good artist means constant exploring and finding new problems to solve. I keep an eclectic body of work to represent that exploration. There is, however, one unifying thread in all my work and it is a sense of narrative. From single frame paintings to animations I am a storyteller. I believe in the power of the anecdote. It can teach us lessons, bring us comfort, or simply entertain. I believe the anecdote is the most accessible form of communication and while sophistication and thought are important, they are masturbation without an audience.
