FAQs: AMT Undergraduate Festival Exhibition and Limited Edition Pop Up Shop – Last Day to Apply!

Greetings! If you did not get a chance to attend an info session with our talented curator, Amanda Parmer, or if you did, but still have questions, below are some answers to help you apply for the AMT Undergraduate Festival Exhibition and Limited Edition Pop Up Shop. Applications are due by 11:59pm, today, Monday, April 15th

Click here to access the submission form. Note: You must be logged into your @newschool.edu account to access the form.

***
Q: Can I apply to both the Exhibition and The Pop Up Shop? Can I apply to just the Pop Up Shop or just the Exhibition?

A: Yes, to both. There is one application for both the exhibition and the pop up shop, as the two are being organized in dialog with one another. The curator will determine from your submitted samples if you could potentially have work in both forums, or if the work is more appropriate for one over the other.

Q: How the work will be selected?

A: The work will be selected based on the relationships between the artworks and projects that you submit. The curator will be selecting applicants who contribute to expressing compelling connections between the different departments and subsequently will determine the inclusion of works that offer a holistic vision of shared interests across your graduating class in The School of Art, Media, and Technology.

Q: I’m not quite finished with the work I want to exhibit or have in the Pop Up. Am I doomed?

A: No, you are not doomed. It is important to note that the works you submit in the application are not necessarily the works to be shown. The three images or videos you choose to upload for the application should be representative of projects you believe are the strongest in your current practice. These works could be from your first year, or they could be as recent as your thesis piece.

Q: I have a project that requires documentation from multiple angles, and has a lot details. Can I include multiple image urls for one project?

A: No. If you would like to include detail images and angles please do so by compiling all of these components of the piece into a single jpeg (for example, as a pic stitch). Please do not submit more than one image for each work. If you have questions about image/video urls, skip to the bottom of this post now).

Q: How long should the video clips be?

A: Please keep the video clips to a maximum of five minutes each.

Q: When will the applications be reviewed?

A: Your applications will be reviewed between April 15th and 19th.

Q: When will the studio visits happen?

A: Once all of the applications have been reviewed, the curator will be meeting with those of you who have been selected for studio visits to discuss your work and possible inclusion in the exhibition and/or pop up shop. These studio visits will be held between April 19th and April 23rd.

Q: What happens after my work is selected for the exhibition and/or pop up shop?

A: You and the curator will discuss the installation schedule and work together to plan how best to present the piece in dialog with the other projects.

Q: When will  selected works need to be received for the physical installation and/or shop set up?

A: Selected works will need to be received for the installation on April 25th

Q: Where and when are the Exhibition and Pop Up going to be?

A: The exhibition will be held in the Kellen Gallery—from May 9th to May 24th—and the showcase of selected limited edition works will be hosted as an on campus pop up shop from May 20th to May 24th.

Q: I see that I can only include image/video links on the form. I don’t have a website or a place online to put images or video to link to. What can I do?

A: For the form, we need image/video urls. If you don’t have your images housed on your website or other online forum, you can upload images and video to Google Drive, and get a sharable url for each file. See instructions on how to do that below.

Manually upload files and folders to Google Drive

Google Drive allows you to upload and store files in the cloud. You can manually upload both files and folders, including images and videos.

How to manually upload files

There are two ways to upload files to Google Drive:

Drag-and-drop file upload

You can drag-and-drop your files directly from your computer into your Google Drive.

This feature is available only in the latest versions of Chrome and Firefox. If you aren’t working in the latest version of Chrome or Firefox, you can click the Upload button and select Files…from the drop-down menu.

File upload

To manually select files from your computer to upload to Google Drive, follow these steps:

  1. In your Google Drive, click the Upload button and select Files… from the drop-down menu.
  2. Select the file you’d like to upload. To select multiple files, press Shift or Ctrl and click all the files to upload.
  3. Your file will appear in My Drive.

Send a link to a shared file

If you’ve set a file or folder to “Anyone with the link” or “Public,” you can send the link to another person and they’ll be able to access it.

  1. Go to drive.google.com.
  2. Check the box next to the file or folder you’d like to share.
  3. Click the Share icon google drive share icon.
  4. Copy the link at the top of the sharing settings.

Q: I still have more questions! Who do I ask?

A: Should you have more questions regarding the exhibition and application process, please email the AMT Program Administrator, Leslie Henkel: henkell@newschool.edu.

Opportunity for Parsons Illustration Students

Current Parsons student Teresa Nimirowski has an interesting (and paid!) job opportunity for Illustration students.  Her friend’s band needs illustrations, and potentially an animation, to go along with their song, currently featured in a promo for HBO.  Information on the job and contacts are below:

“Hey there guys!

My band Two Seconds to Midnight are currently being featured on HBO as the music for the worldwide promo campaign for the second season of Boardwalk Empire.
Our song is called Opt1m1sm and can be heard on our website, www.twosecondstomidnight.com

We are looking to have some visual representation for the song as it seems a lot of people are looking it up online and downloading it. We are welcoming any students, designers, animators to pitch us some ideas and help us put together a (preferably) animated video. We love the work of the likes of Shynola and some of the more recent Radiohead videos… doesn’t have to be near as complex as those, but just so you know where we are coming from. Can be a very simple idea executed beautifully. Something that should go along with the tone of the song and doesnt have to be literal, can be abstract.

We can offer a little bit of pay (negotiable $250/$300) but along with that there will be a lot of exposure. The song is already getting a lot of hits and the first teaser promo from the show is already at around 110,000 views.

Please get in touch via the below email address if you are interested in collaborating with us in this project!

Cheers!

Nathan and Elisa Bond’s Fight Against Cancer

I’d like to encourage you all to donate artwork to what will be a terrific auction for a great cause, to benefit Illustration’s own Nathan Bond and his family. Some of you may have heard Nathan’s story in the news. He and his wife were diagnosed with advanced forms of cancer virtually simultaneously, and they have an 18- month-old daughter.

Artwork should be delivered to the Illustration Program office no later than May 6. Please pass the word on. Details below!

Yours,

Steven Gaurnaccia
Director, Illustration
Parsons The New School for Design

=====

Hi Everyone,

I am organizing a benefit auction for Nathan and Elisa Bond.  For those of you who do not know their story, please see below.  There are links to articles and videos that tell all.  Nathan teaches painting in the Illustration Program and drawing in the Foundation Program.

I am looking for artists to donate a work for this cause.  All works collected will be featured in an exhibition for one night (May 10) at Flux Factory in Brooklyn.  Here is the format for the auction:  There will be one ticket sold for each work collected.  Purchasing a ticket guarantees you will receive a work in the show.  When the auction begins, the holder of the first ticket number pulled randomly will be allowed first choice of the show.  We will then proceed drawing tickets until all works in the show are claimed.  Ticket prices are yet to be determined, but will be approximately $200-$250.  Works are taken home as they are chosen.  We will have volunteers on hand during the choosing
of the works to collect contact info to be made available to each artist on who chose their work.

I have been asking many of you in person as I see you if you would be willing to donate a work for this auction.  I currently have about 40 commitments and I thank you all.  My goal however is to bring this number to between 100-150 so if you would like to participate, or know of another artist who could donate a work, I would appreciate knowing as soon as possible.   I need to have the art collected and accounted for in order to sell tickets, and as I am sure you can imagine, preparing for a show of this magnitude will not be easy in such a short amount of time.

If you have already committed to donating a work to this auction or would like to, please send an email to toddlambrix@gmail.com.  Please include a current Bio, Artist statement, and or CV to be printed and made available at the show, the name of the work, medium, dimensions, and date the work was made.  I will respond to you with directions for delivering the work.  We intend to hang the works at the show in the most appropriate manner possible.  If your piece requires special handling, hanging instructions or hardware, please be sure to detail this in the email.  Please keep in mind that people should be able to leave the night of May 10th with their collected work with relative
ease.  We cannot leave anything in the gallery space past the night of the reception.

I would also like to request that you share this story with artists within your professional circles and see if they are interested in donating a work for this show.  Please pass along my email to them or send me theirs so that I may get in touch.

As with any opening or gallery reception, all are invited to attend and I hope that you will spread the word so that we can have a supportive turnout.  Flux Factory is located at: 39-31 29th Street, Long Island City, Queens.  Again, the event will be held on May 10, 2011 from 5:00-8:00pm  Auction will begin promptly at 6:15.

New colours for a classic
International illustration competition Laura Orvieto

To mark the centenary of Storie della storia del mondo (Stories of the History of the World) by Laura Orvieto, published for the first time by the Bemporad publishing house of Florence in 1911, the publisher Sergio Giunti (the heir and custodian of this prestigious publishing history) has sponsored an international illustration competition to select the illustrator for the centenary edition of the book.

The publisher’s intention in this competition is to stimulate young artists to measure themselves against classical art and the iconography of the classic that can be traced in the history of art and in the contemporary visual universe.

An international jury, chaired by the publisher, will select a shortlist of ten projects from which it will choose the winner who will receive a reward of 20,000 Euro in order to illustrate the volume.

Illustrators of all nationalities can take part in the competition, individually or in groups, whether they are already qualified or are still attending public or private schools of illustration, art academies or universities.

All participants are required to produce three artworks representing either significant moments in history or studies on characters and settings. The size of the artworks must not exceed 50 x 70 cm.

The artworks can either be on paper or any other material, however the artist must keep in mind the requirements and production steps of printing process. The selected artworks will be held at the Accademia Drosselmeier until the 2011 in order to be displayed as an exhibit curated by Giunti Editore during the next edition of the Bologna Children’s Bookfair.

The artworks must be submitted by August 30, 2010 to:
Accademia Drosselmeir
Via Nazario Sauro, 21
