Steven Guarnaccia interviewed!

Parsons Illustration Chair Steven Guarnaccia was recently interviewed by 36pages.com for a write-up about his most recent book Three Little Pigs.  Here’s a snippet:

Clearly a design aficionado, Guarnaccia sets out to pay homage to some of his heroes. “My goal was to introduce children to everyday, albeit extraordinary, design. They’re taught the names of authors and fine artists from an early age, but the applied arts are often overlooked.”

The book is a retelling of the original story except the pigs are famous architects Frank Lloyd Wright, Philip Johnson and Frank Gehry. It’s chock-full of design references and iconic work by the pigs and others like Noguchi, Saarinen, Starck, Sottsass, and many more.

Mike Perry designs for Semigood

Illustrator Mike Perry is a new addition to the Parsons Illustration stellar roster of adjunct faculty!  For those of you not in his Materials and Methods class, and as a way of introduction, we’d like to highlight a project Mike participated in recently.  Here’s the scoop:

Boutique furniture company Semigood Design, based in beautiful Seattle, boasts an impressive lineup of products….With a nod to the past and to Danish styling, the furniture is functional, locally-sourced and sturdy. And with the new flat pack ready-to-assemble line, it’s put together in about 5 minutes.

Semigood recently collaborated with Mike Perry for a customizable, limited-edition asset to their Rian collection (see image above!). Adding to their already colorful product line, Mr. Perry left his singular mark on the stools in the form of a playful surf-aquatic theme. Playful and appropriate: Semigood is donating considerable proceeds from the sales to the Surfrider Foundation.

In addition to this project, Mike always has a lot of other things in the hopper.  You can check out his website for more!  Welcome to the Illustration neighborhood, Mike.

The Exquisite Book
More details on the book:

In The Exquisite Book, one hundred indie artists play an ingenious version of the Exquisite Corpse drawing game. Each adorns a page with artwork—having seen only the page of the artist immediately prior and using a single horizon line to connect the two. Some continue the “story” quite literally while others build on the previous page in more fanciful ways. This astonishing volume’s format is as unique as its content, with each of the book’s ten chapters residing on a ten-page accordion pull-out, allowing readers to view the art continuously. With an illustrated foreword by Dave Eggers, and art from such luminaries as James Jean and (Parsons Illustration Alum) Jill Bliss, this charming book is, simply, exquisite.

You can pick up a copy of the book here.

Jill isn’t the only Parsons Illustration-related person in the book: Illustration faculty members Jordin Isip and Mike Perry are in on the action as well!  Congrats to all.
