On Sunday, November 27, The New York Times published an article about the new film adaptation of ‘The Adventures of Tintin“. The 3-D film, in theaters December 21, is directed by Steven Spielberg and produced by Peter Jackson. Hero, Villain, Yeti: Tibet in Comics at the Rubin Museum
Hero, Villain, Yeti opens on Friday, December 9th at the Rubin Museum. The exhibit is an extensive collection of comics related to Tibet, with characters as diverse as Mickey Mouse, Buddha, and Tomb Raider Lara Croft. The collection includes more than fifty international comic books dated from the 1940s to present day. Tibet is explored as both a historical, political setting and a fantasy land. In addition to those on display, dozens of comics are available for reading.

Gallery admission is free every Friday from 6 – 10 p.m.
There is a members-only preview night for the exhibit on Thursday, December 8th, featuring remarks from chief curator Jan Van Alphen and an illustrated keytalk by exhibition curator Martin Brauen. The preview night begins at 6 p.m. and tickets are available to members of the museum on a first come, first served basis.

Parsons Illustration faculty members Melinda Beck and Jordin Isip‘s joint show “Before or Since” opens Saturday, November 19th at SPUR Gallery in Baltimore, MD. The opening reception is 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The Study of Kabakov at Edelman Arts
A new show entitled “The Study of Kabakov” just opened at Edelman Arts Inc. (136 East 74th Street, New York, New York). The exhibition is a collection of the artists’ works on paper, printed reproductions of three albums (the unique medium pioneered by Ilya Kabakov in the 1970s) from the “Ten Characters” series, as well as numerous scholarly books, countless interviews and sketchbooks for many of the installations. “The Study of Kabakov” also marks the premiere of Kabkov’s drawings and works on paper in the United States – they have otherwise not been exhibited anywhere in the country.

James Jean is Releasing a new Monograph “Rebus” – Come Celebrate with us at Reed Space
Join us as we celebrate the release of Rebus, a new monograph by the artist James Jean. The book signing will be held at Reed Space, 151 Orchard St between Stanton St and Rivington St. Other books by the artist will be available for sale including Rift, XOXO, and Kindling. Rebus showcases everything from James Jean’s eerily dreamy oil paintings to his illustration work. The new monograph is the culmination of a well thought out and fully articulated instillation. James leaves us feeling fulfilled as he showcases his creative milestones even including never before seen pages from his sketch book.
Children’s Literary Salon – Coming to America

The New York Public Library is hosting an panel discussing differences between American children’s books and those from other countries. Such subjects as the impact of translation on a story will be discussed by a panel that includes Parsons Illustration’s Associate Professor Nora Krug. Set in The New York Public Library at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street and in the environs of Times Square circa 1970, Up From the Stacks is the story of Lincoln Cabinée, a college student working part-time as a page, retrieving books for readers from the Library’s collection of 43 million items. This routine evening job inadvertently thrusts young Cabinée into the treacherous crossroads of scholarly obsession and the businesses of amusement and vice that then flourished in the 42nd Street area. The intellectual life of the city and the happiness of a young man hang in the balance.
Co-commissioned by the Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers at The New York Public Library, and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts for Target Free Thursdays at the David Rubenstein Atrium.

Juliette Borda, Rolling Stone and the Art of the Record Review
Parsons Illustration Faculty Juliette Borda is featured in the Society of Illustrators Rolling Stone show, Rolling Stone and the Art of the Record Review which opened September 1st. The reception is this Friday, September 9th at 6:30 p.m.
The show includes more than 80 original works commissioned over 40 years for Rolling Stone’s Record Review column. In addition to Juliette, artists include Gary Baseman, Philip Burke, John Collier, Drew Friedman, Tomer Hanuka, Anita Kunz, Tim O’Brien, Stephen Kroninger, Dugald Stermer
and many more.

Ilustrarte Children’s Book Competition
ILUSTRARTE is a Portuguese competition for children’s book illustrators worldwide. The competition takes place once every two years and awards a grand prize of 5,000 Euros to the winner of the competition. Illustrators from all over the world are invited to take part and send three original illustrations, published or unpublished.
