6 Parsons Students with 10 Images Selected to Appear in American Illustration 32 Annual Book

Parsons Illustration seniors Franca Barone, Leigh Cunningham, Kristen Davis, and Meghann Stephenson, and recent graduates Monica Ramos and Hazel Lee Santino (class of 2012) were selected by a distinguished jury to be included in the American Illustration 32 annual book. This year’s distinguished jury included Jordan Awan, The New Yorker; Sergio Baradat, United Nations Postal Administration; Chad W. Beckerman, Abrams; Joele Cuyler, Real Simple; Jennifer Daniel, Bloomberg Businessweek; Grace Lee, Priest + Grace; and Alexandra Zsigmond, The New York Times.

From 8,742 pieces entered by over 1,282 illustrators, magazines, agencies, publishers, and schools, the jury selected only 369 images to appear in the book and represent the best pictures from 2011. It will be printed and distributed worldwide in hardcover this fall. Congratulations to them and their teachers!

6 Parsons Students Awarded Scholarships from the Society of Illustrators; Masuko Jo gets top prize!

Six Parsons Illustration students were awarded scholarships in the 2013 Society of Illustrators Student Scholarship Competition. Only 33 works from the 271 selected by the jury for the show from the initial 8,595 submissions received scholarships. Congratualtions to them for this incredible achievement.

Zachary Zezima illustrates the cover of American Illustration 31

The cover and end pages of American Illustration 31 was done by Parsons Illustration alum Zachary Zezima (2009). You can see more images on his blog. It was designed by Paul Sahre and Erik Carter. See it in book form here. Come celebrate its publication at the AI-AP Party on Friday, Nov. 9.

One Hundred Dollars

Recent Parsons Illustration graduates  Su kyung (Hannah) LeeRachel Levit, and Hazel Lee Santino, and faculty Melinda Beck, Jordin Isip , and Taylor McKimens were included in One Hundred Dollars, a group show curated by Andrew Smenos and Sergio Barrale this summer at Littlefield in Brooklyn, NY. Each piece by the one hundred artists had to use a dollar bill as its canvas. Some of the other artists included were Daniel Davidson, Tricia Keightley, Rob Leecock, Matt Leines, Kristen Schiele, Joe Sorren, and Eric White. These 13 works from the Parsons Illustration Program were chosen from over 8,000 pieces entered by illustrators, magazines, agencies, publishers, and schools. Congratulations to them and their teachers!

Rima Fujita at the Trace Foundation

Parsons alumna Rima Fujita will be speaking at the Trace Foundation on May 10th. Fujita will discuss her latest book, “Save the Himalayas” (forwards by the Dalai Lama and Richard Gere), her Books for Children project, and her recent trip to India to deliver her books to the Tibetan refugee children. Guest readers will read from “Save the Himalayas” in Tibetan, English, and Japanese, and original art from the book will be on display. After the readings Fujita will be available for signing.

Phillip Nessen

Phillip Nessen’s company, Help Remedies, has been nominated for a Webby Award this year!

You might’ve spotted their cool, minimalistic packaging in major convenience/pharmaceutical stores around the country. Phillip designed and built the website himself, so check out the site and vote for “Help Remedies”.

And if that’s not enough motivation, David Bowie was a judge this year. So there’s that…
