Adam Baumgold Gallery and Carl Hammer Gallery (Chicago) present an exhibition of 126 drawings by Chris Ware to coincide with the release of his new book Building Stories. Over ten years in the making, several of the drawings from this series were first published in The New York Times Sunday Magazine and The New Yorker. Building Stories takes its final form as 14 discrete books and booklets collected in a printed box. The result is something utterly unique-part graphic novel, part sculpture, and part mobius strip. The show runs from September 8 – October 27, 2012.

Bongoût Gallery is proud to present New York artist David Sandlin in his first exhibition in Berlin. He will be showing his books; new paintings; “puritanical novelty items”; and a collection of drawings from his 2006 book, An Alphabetical Ballad of Carnality.  This will be the first major showing of Sandlin’s artist’s-book opus A Sinner’s Progress, an eight-volume series comprised mostly of large-scale hand-printed books, including his most recent work, Slumburbia, a nine-metre silkscreened panorama of sloth and indolence in sumptuous hand-separated color silkscreen.

David Sandlin floats between the worlds of painting, printmaking, comics, and artist’s books. Since he began his career in the 1980s, visual narrative, usually nonlinear, has been a core component of his work. He uses it as a structural device to build content and express ideas while still being able to experiment with form, using symbolism and allegory to amplify his social commentary. Sandlin’s books range in form from complex hand-bound silkscreened editions to offset pulp-style comics—each volume’s form in service to its content to some extent. “The book rather than the single image is the ideal medium for me to explore content and experiment with form,” says Sandlin.

Eccentric modernist painters like Beckmann, Ensor, and Guston have inspired Sandlin’s explorations into the mythic/transformative utility of personal history. His love of words and literature also draw him toward narrative: “I was born in Northern Ireland and moved to the USA, to Alabama, when I was a teenager—both places steeped in the narrative-literary tradition—so I’m not surprised that I need to incorporate words into my images. I love the wordplay used by Irish and southern American artists like James Joyce, Flann O’Brien, Flannery O’Connor, and Hank Williams.”

Other works in the exhibition reflect Sandlin’s love of narrative. “The Sleep of History,” a large work on canvas, is part of his ongoing series of epic paintings. Drawings upon which his abecedarium, An Alphabetical Ballad of Carnality, are also on display as a 22-metre-long panorama. He will also be showing components of “The Pur-Ton-o-Fun Co. Reading Room,” a multimedia installation piece based on A Sinner’s Progress.

David Sandlin’s work has been displayed in galleries and museums worldwide, and his comics have been published by Fantagraphics and Cornelius Editions and have also appeared in many anthologies, including Raw, Strapazin, The Ganzfeld, and The Best American Comics 2009. He is currently preparing to start his next book, a graphic novel, as a Fellow of the Cullman Center for Writers and Scholars, at the New York Public Library, in NYC.

Please join us on Sunday, June 7 for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hear forgotten songs inspired by unforgettable comic strip characters!

For one night only, the fabulous Jalopy theater will host a live performance of vintage compositions based on Krazy Kat, the
Katzenjammer Kids, Barney Google, Smokey Stover, Li’l Abner, and more, featuring lyrics by Milt Gross, Rube Goldberg, Walt Kelly, and other cartooning and pop music legends.

These songs are lively (and funny) artifacts from the days before television, when comic strips were the dominant form of daily visual entertainment, and from the days before radio, when new songs –published as sheet music — were routinely performed by families and friends in America’s living rooms and parlors. Hundreds of songs based on comic strip characters were published during this fertile period, and co-curators Bill Kartalopoulos and Mark Newgarden will present some of the very best — as well as some of the most wonderfully obscure!

Many of these comic strip songs were never recorded, never filmed, and most have never been publicly performed in the decades since their original publication. The event will also feature some later, post-war songs, including a selection from Broadway’s Li’l Abner and Walt Kelly’s memorable Pogo songs. The archival sheet music used for this special performance was provided courtesy of Mark Newgarden’s longtime collection.

A stunning line-up of celebrated musicians will bring these unearthed gems back to life, including:

Parsons Illustration will have a strong presence at the Comic and Cartoon Art Festival this weekend–Stop by and talk to Steven Guarnaccia, the chair of the program, or visit with some students and look at their work!  Interested in Illustration?  We’ll have info about the program and Parsons in general.

21st Annual Indie and Small Press Book Fair this weekend!

Celebrate publishing’s independent spirit with over 100 indie publishers from around the world, all under one roof, selling books you can’t get at your big box bookstore. The Indie and Small Press Book Fair is one of New York City’s favorite annual literary events. It’s free, open to all, and packed with an exciting line-up of public events. Bonus: In addition to all the wonderful wares and events, Illustration Alum and Faculty member R. Sikoryak will be giving a lecture on Saturday, December 6th, 2 p.m. Here are the details:

Masterpiece Comics: A Slide Show with R. Sikoryak

Comic book artist and Parsons instructor R. Sikoryak presents literature as seen through the cartoon medium. His slideshow explores the intersection of “high art” literature and “low art” comic strips as seen in the works by cartoonists who have adapted classic novels and plays. Sikoryak (whose own work includes adaptations of Dostoyevsky and Emily Bronte) discusses the history of these reinterpretations with images from over ninety years of comic strips, comic books, and graphic novels.

Timothy Marvin, a grassroots organizer with the Consumers Union passed along this contest opportunity…

The Consumers Union “Dangers of Debt” Cartoon Contest site is live now! Anyone 18-25 can go upload their submissions. The deadline to submit is November 3rd. The grand prize winner gets $1,000 and whatever exposure is provided through our campaign and media outreach.

Our panel of celebrity judges is made up of:

Tom Gammill is a TV writer whose credits include Saturday Night Live, Late Night with David Letterman, Seinfeld and Monk.  He’s been a consulting producer at The Simpsons since 1998.
He also has a comic strip that runs weekly in the Pasadena Independent and other small weekly newspapers.

Jen Sorenson is the creator of the award-winning alternative political comic strip Slowpoke.

Lalo Alcaraz is a Mexican-American cartoonist and multimedia humorist now best known for his daily syndicated comic strip La Cucaracha.

The controversial cartoonist Rory Hayes was a self-taught dynamo of the underground comics revolution. Attracting equal parts derision and praise (the latter from the likes of R. Crumb and Bill Griffith), Hayes emerged as comics’ great primitive, drawing horror comics in a genuinely horrifying and hallucinator manner (some have called him the Fletcher Hanks of the underground). He has influenced a generation of cartoonists, from RAW to Fort Thunder and back again.

On Friday, Aug. 8, on what would have been Hayes’ 59th birthday (Hayes died of a drug overdose in 1983), Desert Island and Fantagraphics Books will celebrate the life and art of Rory Hayes with a special evening celebrating the release of WHERE DEMENTED WENTED, the first-ever collection of Hayes’ legendary comics and art.

Editor Dan Nadel (Gary Panter, The Wilco Book) will moderate a discussion of Hayes’ work with three men who knew and worked with Hayes: Kim Deitch (creator of Waldo the Cat), Bill Griffith (creator of Zippy the Pinhead), and Geoffrey Hayes (brother of Rory and author of the recent Benny and Penny from Toon Books).

WHERE DEMENTED WENTED: THE ART AND COMIX OF RORY HAYES is the first retrospective of Hayes’ career ever published, features the best of his underground comics output alongside paintings, covers, and artifacts rarely seen by human eyes—as well as astounding, previously unprinted comics from his teenage years and movie posters for his numerous homemade films. The Art and Comix of Rory Hayes also serves as a biography and critique with a memoir of growing up with Rory by his brother, the illustrator Geoffrey Hayes, and a career-spanning essay by Edward Pouncey (a.k.a. Savage Pencil). Also included is a rare interview with Hayes himself.

This should be a great event and a fantastic book.  Check ’em both out!
