Tonight the Parsons Typography Club meets at “Booklyn”

Tonight, the new Parsons Typography Club will be going to “Booklyn,” an artists and bookmakers organization located in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, to look at artists books that focus on typography and then discuss.

They will be meeting at Booklyn tonight (Thursday, February 28) at 7pm

PROFESSIONAL SHOW – DEADLINE: MARCH 15

The 3×3 ProShow is the only truly international competition for illustration. No other show is as completely international. While many shows showcase the work of their own country’s illustrators, 3×3 features the best work from all over the world.

Winners will be invited to participate in the next 3×3 Illustration Directory which is mailed out free to a highly targeted list of 6,100 art directors and art buyers in the US.

Prizes

This year they’ll be awarding a cash prize of $1,500 for Best of Show winner and cash value prizes of $750 for each of the gold medal winners. This year all winners will receive paper certificates suitable for framing.

Eligiblity

Open to all art directors, editors, designers and illustrators.

This year’s categories include: Advertising, Animation, Books, Editorial, Fashion, Gallery, Institutional, Medical, Self-Promotion, Sequential, Three-Dimensional and Unpublished.

The 3×3 Student Show is the only truly international competition for students majoring in illustration, featuring the best work from all over the world. Top honors in their past two shows have gone to young illustrators in Germany.

Each year they receive entries from all corners of the globe, from every major art school. Whether it’s Art Center, School of Visual Arts, Ontario College of Art and Design, University College of Falmouth, Kingston University, the Royal College of Art or other leading colleges and universities.  Work is judged by illustrators who are also educators.

Prizes

This year they’ll be awarding a cash prize of $1,000 for Best of Show winner and cash value prizes of $500 for each of the gold medal winners. This year all winners will receive paper certificates suitable for framing.

Open to all undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate students who were attending school during the 2009 calendar year.

Each entry is judged on a scale of 0 to 4, 4 being the best. To be included in the show an entry must be given either 3 or 4 points by a majority of the judges. To win a Gold, Silver or Bronze medal a majority of the judge’s must give the piece a score of 4 points. To receive a Best of Show more than a majority of judges must give the piece a score of no less than 4 points.

CHILDREN’S BOOK SHOW

The panel for this year’s show is being selected. Details will be posted in late February.

Here are the official rules straight from Spraygraphic:

MINI MINI: A 4×4 Mini Art Show
Spraygraphic.com is asking artists from all over the world to submit works of art (all mediums) that are no larger than 4 x 4 inches and that can be hung flat against the a wall. The depth of the artwork can exceed 4inches (ex. Sculpture) but it must be able to be hung on a wall without extraneous assistance. We expect to end up with a gallery full of diverse, compelling, and exquisite little pieces of art.

Requirements: IMPORTANT – Read This to Avoid Problems With Your Submission

1) The Deadline for Entry is March 5th, 2009. THERE IS NO ENTRY FEE!!!

2) NO FRAMES OR FRAMING OF ART

3) The MINI MINI show will be displayed at Push Gallery (Phoenix)on March 6th (Phoenix First Friday) and then moved on March 7th to Cartel Coffee/Art Gallery in Tempe for the rest of the month and and then installed atConspire Art Gallery in Phoenix (5th and Garfield) on April 1st for a month long showing.

4) All submissions must come in a 4×4 format that can be hung flat on a wall. The art can be no larger than 4 inches. but the art’s depth can exceed four inches. The show is open to all traditional and non-traditional genre and media, but it must be able to be hung flat on the wall from the back.

5) All artists that submit a piece must have a spraygraphic profile to be accepted for submission. No profile, no hanging.

6) All artists must send information on a typed piece of paper and it must include: their spraygraphic address (Ex. www.spraygraphic.com/chuckb) along with their name, location, title of piece, and price (if selling art), along with any other pertinent info you can think of.

7) All media is accepted. Sculpture, paint, markers, stickers, crayon, etc. are all acceptable.

8) Each artist is allowed up to two (2) pieces.

9) Please make sure your piece is completely dry before shipping. Allow at least 48 hours drying time before packing and shipping your artwork. Also wrap them in plastic or other film, DO NOT USE PAPER.

10) Time is of importance because the show is on March 6th and we would like to begin hanging on March 4th.If you haven’t started it yet then start it, finish it, and send it out…

Everyone that submits a work will be hung at the show on March 6th.

Please take this opportunity to review the following exhibition opportunity, which is perfect for any student in our department and only requires you to submit images of your best work that you have already completed and a short written piece.  (details below:)

In Spring 2008 a group of Parsons faculty, staff and students were selected by the Dean’s Office and Student Senate to form a committee in charge of curating the student wallpaper spaces in the Sheila Johnson Design Center.  These three locations are currently covered with student work that will be rotated for Fall 2008.  Below is the  interim process to receive and select new work for consideration for the NorthEast corner location.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
Due July 10th to FalerG01@newschool.edu

We are looking for submissions from students or recent graduates that:

1. Were completed in any class at Parsons (individual or group-based) through Summer 2008

2. Consider the core values as stated in the paragraphs included below.

3. Consider how the wallpaper in these highly visible public spaces can reflect our community.

4. Consider the scale of the architecture.

5. Engage with a social or critical thematic.

Each student can submit up to three images and statements.  Please email your low resolution jpeg or pdf to George Falero at FalerG01@newschool.edu as well as a 100-word statement describing each submission and how it reflects Parsons’ mission statement below.

The committee will meet to review all submissions and make selections according to the criteria listed above.  Decisions will be announced by August 1st.
