Quick Hit: Rachel Nolasco on Threadless!

Parsons Illustration Rising Senior Rachel Nolasco is a winner!  She was chosen by her classmates in Isabelle Dervaux‘s Junior Concepts class as the winner of a classroom competition based around the creation/design of a t-shirt design for the mega-cool and creative Threadless.  The t-shirt design was featured in a Threadless newsletter!  Rachel calls the shirt, “Mutual End” and describes it thusly: “The concept for this design is the juxtaposition of life and death and how they both exist together and are shared by every living thing.”   You can see Rachel’s design on the Threadless site here.

Congrats on your success, Rachel and luck in the future!

Looking for a place to stay in Paris

We’re passing along this listing for Coline Irwin, a friend of the Illustration Program.  Seems like an amazing opportunity…

I have a charming, typically parisian, 45 sq meter flat, overlooking
Paris. It has beautiful views of the Eiffel Tower, Sacré Coeur, and
the Paris skies. Top floor (with elevator). One bedroom, one large
living-room with amazing light every second of the day, kitchen,
bathroom. It is located between the Sacré Coeur and Gare du Nord.
Very interesting, lively neighborhood, great apartment.
Don’t hesitate to contact me for more details or photos.

Call for Entries: International Illustration Competition

New colours for a classic
International illustration competition Laura Orvieto

To mark the centenary of Storie della storia del mondo (Stories of the History of the World) by Laura Orvieto, published for the first time by the Bemporad publishing house of Florence in 1911, the publisher Sergio Giunti (the heir and custodian of this prestigious publishing history) has sponsored an international illustration competition to select the illustrator for the centenary edition of the book.

The publisher’s intention in this competition is to stimulate young artists to measure themselves against classical art and the iconography of the classic that can be traced in the history of art and in the contemporary visual universe.

An international jury, chaired by the publisher, will select a shortlist of ten projects from which it will choose the winner who will receive a reward of 20,000 Euro in order to illustrate the volume.

Illustrators of all nationalities can take part in the competition, individually or in groups, whether they are already qualified or are still attending public or private schools of illustration, art academies or universities.

All participants are required to produce three artworks representing either significant moments in history or studies on characters and settings. The size of the artworks must not exceed 50 x 70 cm.

The artworks can either be on paper or any other material, however the artist must keep in mind the requirements and production steps of printing process. The selected artworks will be held at the Accademia Drosselmeier until the 2011 in order to be displayed as an exhibit curated by Giunti Editore during the next edition of the Bologna Children’s Bookfair.

The artworks must be submitted by August 30, 2010 to:
Accademia Drosselmeir
Via Nazario Sauro, 21
40121 – Bologna – Italy

The Strand Tote Bag Design Contest

The Strand Book Store has partnered with the School of Visual Arts, TOON Books, Drawn & Quarterly and Fantagraphics Books to host a tote bag design contest.

Beginning March 1, 2010, artists from around the world are invited to submit original illustrations featuring the Strand Book Store.

In June 2007, the Strand unveiled the first Artist Tote Bag: Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Art Spiegelman loaned his iconic Maus image for the first time ever to celebrate the Strand’s 80th birthday. The Strand then partnered with artists each year, including Adrian Tomine, Seth and Parsons Illustration Alum and Faculty member R. Sikoryak, creating the Strand’s Artist Tote Series. Now, the Strand Book Store wants to give emerging artists the opportunity to have their artwork featured on a Strand tote bag.
