3×3 call for entries!
3×3 SHOWS 2010
PROFESSIONAL SHOW – DEADLINE: MARCH 15
The 3×3 ProShow is the only truly international competition for illustration. No other show is as completely international. While many shows showcase the work of their own country’s illustrators, 3×3 features the best work from all over the world.
Winners will be invited to participate in the next 3×3 Illustration Directory which is mailed out free to a highly targeted list of 6,100 art directors and art buyers in the US.
Prizes
This year they’ll be awarding a cash prize of $1,500 for Best of Show winner and cash value prizes of $750 for each of the gold medal winners. This year all winners will receive paper certificates suitable for framing.
Eligiblity
Open to all art directors, editors, designers and illustrators.
Categories
This year’s categories include: Advertising, Animation, Books, Editorial, Fashion, Gallery, Institutional, Medical, Self-Promotion, Sequential, Three-Dimensional and Unpublished.

STUDENT SHOW – DEADLINE: MARCH 26
The 3×3 Student Show is the only truly international competition for students majoring in illustration, featuring the best work from all over the world. Top honors in their past two shows have gone to young illustrators in Germany.
Each year they receive entries from all corners of the globe, from every major art school. Whether it’s Art Center, School of Visual Arts, Ontario College of Art and Design, University College of Falmouth, Kingston University, the Royal College of Art or other leading colleges and universities. Work is judged by illustrators who are also educators.
Prizes
This year they’ll be awarding a cash prize of $1,000 for Best of Show winner and cash value prizes of $500 for each of the gold medal winners. This year all winners will receive paper certificates suitable for framing.
Eligiblity
Open to all undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate students who were attending school during the 2009 calendar year.

Each entry is judged on a scale of 0 to 4, 4 being the best. To be included in the show an entry must be given either 3 or 4 points by a majority of the judges. To win a Gold, Silver or Bronze medal a majority of the judge’s must give the piece a score of 4 points. To receive a Best of Show more than a majority of judges must give the piece a score of no less than 4 points.
CHILDREN’S BOOK SHOW
The panel for this year’s show is being selected. Details will be posted in late February.

Since 1998, designer Scott Stowell has been doing business as Open–and as such has survived by staying small, specialized in not really specializing in anything in particular, and (as described in the Cooper-Hewitt’s DesignUSA show) embraced “an open notion of the term ‘office,’ inviting different participants to every project.”
As it turns out, everything is connected and everything is an opportunity–if you’re paying attention. Please join Scott for a new, never-before-seen talk full of new (and old) stories about new (and old) work from over ten years of making “design for people.” There may also be prizes and there will surely be distractions.
Scott is the proprietor of Open, an independent design studio that has made a lot of things, including the editorial design of Good magazine, short films for Google and Jazz at Lincoln Center, signage for the Yale University Art Gallery and the new AIGA membership cards. In 2008, Scott was the winner of the National Design Award for Communication Design.

The Cultivated Life: A Talk by Jean-Philippe Delhomme on February 3rd
Jean-Philippe Delhomme is perhaps one of the most influential artist-illustrators working today. He is internationally known for his witty satirical illustrations that are as much gentle ribbing at the notion of the “good life” in the modern world as they are chronicles of the hip and fabulous.
For this reason his work has been embraced by the worlds of fashion, art and design as well as luxury commercial clients, including: Barneys, Grazia Casa, GQ, the Mark Hotel- New York, Le Bon Marche, Indochine, Casa Brutus, Whitewall, Travel and Leisure, SAA B, the NY Times, VISA , Interview Magazine, Vogue Nippon, House and Garden, Vogue UK and the New Yorker.

Illustration Alums and Faculty fundraise for Haiti!
Parsons Illustration Alum and current Adjunct Faculty member Veronica Lawlor passed along the following information about Studio 1482‘s fundraising efforts to help the people of Haiti. Here’s the scoop:
In response to the recent terrible earthquake in Haiti, the illustrators of Studio 1482 have each created a piece of art to raise money on behalf of the victims. It is our effort to support the international appeal for funds by CARE, a leading humanitarian relief organization. We’ve selected CARE because we believe in their commitment.
For each donation of $50 or more to CARE, you will receive a hand-signed 13″ x 19″ limited edition print from one of the Studio 1482 illustrators.

Associate Professor Nora Krug is working with the Poster Cause Project and has created an open-edition poster which is being sold to support in the relief efforts. ALL 100% OF PROFITS from this print will be donated to Doctors Without Borders, an international medical humanitarian organization created by doctors and journalists in France in 1971. Parsons Illustration Alum and current Adjunct Faculty member Trey Hoyumpa is pitching in with her own humanitarian effort–hand-pulled silkscreen cards with the proceeds benefitting Haiti. You can grab your own at Trey’s Etsy shop, located here.

The Storyteller exhibition opening at Parsons next week
The Sheila C. Johnson Design Center presents:
The Storyteller
an exhibition exploring how contemporary artists use narrative as a way to understand the social and political events of our time.
Curated by independent curators Claire Gilman and Margaret Sundell, The Storyteller features video, still photography, drawing, mixed media and installation works that engage the documentary capacity of art to bear witness to the rapid, sometimes violent, transformations of our time.
Featured artists include Cao Fei, Turner Prize winner Jeremy Deller with filmmaker Mike Figgis, Bucksbaum Award winner Omer Fast, Mounir Fatmi, Ryan Gander, Lamia Joreige, Joachim Koester, Emanuel Licha, Missing Books (Maria Barnas, Maxine Kopsa and Germaine Kruip), Steve Mumford, Adrian Paci, Michael Rakowitz, Lisa Roberts, and Hito Steyerl.

Tonight: Dave Eggers event about the McSweeney’s Newspaper
A Vibrant Map of the World: McSweeney’s Panorama and the Beauty of Newspapers
January 13, 2010 5:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.

When McSweeney’s printed a prototype Sunday newspaper last month, the writers, editors, and artists who worked on the project were hoping to show some of the great things the print medium remains capable of. The result was the San Francisco Panorama, which sold out within its first week and garnered accolades across the country.
Dave Eggers, author and editor of McSweeney’s, joined by contributors to the project, will give a presentation on the Panorama, discussing the thinking that went into it and what newspapers as a print medium still have to offer.

Follow up: Toy Workshop at Gallery Hanahou!
On October 19th, Caty Bartholomew’s Toy Concepts Development and Design class was invited to participate in a workshop at Gallery Hanahou, run by “guerilla” crafting club Ossu! Shugeibu from Japan. (Ossu! was in town for a week to attend their show’s opening at the gallery.)
They made “robodogs” in a very quick hour and a quarter, then proudly took them out for a stroll on Broadway. They even caught some interest from passersby and, all in all, had a pile of fun.
