hugo-cabret

We’re passing along this fantastic invitation from Parsons Illustration faculty member Pat Cummings

For the final sessions of my classes (both Parsons and Pratt) I’m having two guest speakers next week.  Any students you think might be interested in either or both presentations would be welcome to come.

Both presentations will be held at my apartment in the Cobble Hill area of Brooklyn and there’s a limit on how many can attend. So please have anyone interested email me for directions and/or more information ASAP at:

write2me@patcummings.com

please write: ‘children’s book program’ in the subject line so I don’t toss it out as spam.

From the Inbox: The Real Cost of Prisons Comix

Comic artist Kevin Pyle (Blind Spot) sent us the following info recently…

With over 125,000 copies of the comic books printed and more than 100,000 sent to people who are incarcerated, their families, and to organizers and activists throughout the country, The Real Cost of Prisons Comix series is a great example of the comic as an activist and educational tool for social change.

Originally published in a comics pamphlet format, the three issues have now been collected in a perfect bound collection published by PM Press, publisher of Slingshot, the Postcards of Eric Drooker. The three chapters were written and drawn by longtime World War 3 illustrated co-editors Sabrina Jones (Isadora and Girltalk), Kevin Pyle (Blindspot and Lab U.S.A.) and Susan Willmarth (Black History for Beginners) and addresses the war on drugs, the economics of the prison boom, and the effects of incarceration on women and children.

With the U.S.A. now leading the world in incarceration, this thoroughly researched and documented collection seeks to unpack the rhetoric of punishment and expose the impact of a prison system out to control. All in the easily understood and entertaining medium of comics.

Illustration Kids at Parsons

Fantastic news–there’s a new blog for Parsons Illustration students.  Spearheaded by an active group of seniors, this new blog will function as a forum for all Illustration students to interact with each other, as well as a way to strengthen communication between students and the departmental administration.

So…bookmark it!  Get involved!

Also note: the above picture is taken right outside the main door of the Illustration office (Room 806, 2 W. 13th).  That’s right–a “suggestion bot” has been created and is open for business.  It will be available during office hours.  (We’d leave it out all the time but it’s so cool, it would probably get stolen instantly.)
