Artist Statement

My work focuses on questioning systems of power and how they have shaped opposing values in Latin American culture. These dominant culture has created the collective latinx identity, which is filled with harmonious contradictions that are rooted in violent colonization, western influence, and native traditions. I explore the difficulty of finding a sense of identity when many of the aspects I appreciate from my culture oppose the values I strongly stand for. Mainstream Latin American culture has misogynist dynamics and heteronormative family ideals that are the consequence of obsolete mentalities rooted in the Catholic Church. These cultural characteristics have become part of my identity regardless of the fact that I reject them, given that I grew up within them. I approach these contradictory values at a personal level by reframing and altering commonly found objects and images that reference identifiable cultural figures. Most recently, I have engaged in a series of paintings that, through image and text, comment on cultural displacement and simultaneously cultural appreciation.
