Through my painting, acknowledging the distinction between “sexy” and “sexual” is critical.
When a woman is sexual, she is the subject of her own sexuality. As a painter, I reclaim female
sexuality as one’s own right. I work with the found erotic photos in which women were objectified to please men. I paint female bodies as if they were expressing their own sexuality by playing with layers and using expressive brushstrokes to reverse the perception of the imagery.
I alter connotations that come with female sexuality such as pornography and objectification and indicate it is something more than a social construct. I aim to change the consistent narrative
that female sexuality comes from women’s physical and sexual appeal to others, and not from
women’s own desire. I adapt the gesture of action painting, trying to work with these seemingly
inappropriate imageries, not to certify the objectification of women, but to reclaim female
sexuality as one’s own right.
