Animation Block Party!

Some call it punk rock, some call it grass roots, but labels aside – NYC based Animation Block Party is dedicated to exhibiting the world’s best independent, professional and student animation.

Since the premiere of the first official Animation Block Party film festival on September 9th 2004, there have been over 4000 animation submissions from all ends of the earth.

Animation Block Party will run from July 25-27, 2008 in Brooklyn. Over 100 films from a record 800 plus entries will be screened at the fifth annual ABP.

“JAPANESE ILLUSTRATORS IN NY Cre8-vol.5” is the fifth installment of group exhibition presented by Cre8 (pronounced “create”), the Japanese artist management agency established in 1972. The company, which represents over 300 illustrators, acts as a bridge that spans artists and businesses.

In Japan, illustrations can be found in every printed medium – from advertisement and magazines to newspapers and even textbooks. As a result, there is an abundance of work opportunities for illustrators including freelancers.

Illustrations were originally conceived as ways to literally ‘illustrate’ complex matters, ideas and information to make them easier to understand, or see. With advancement of computer graphics and new creative materials, as well as growing popularity of anime and manga, the importance of illustrations as communication medium has increased dramatically in recent years. Today, illustrations, with a seemingly endless array of available creative possibilities, have become the centerpiece of Japanese media culture.

Quick Hit: Art at the Fireside Cocktail Cuisine

Fireside Cocktail Cuisine is an elegant restaurant located in the Omni Berkshire Hotel on East 52nd Street. World travelers and locals alike love Fireside for the innovative cocktail cuisine and wonderful ambiance. The design is simultaneously warm and edgy, and enclosed glass cases throughout the restaurant are ideal for incredible artwork. In addition to a large main fireplace, there are 2 hanging boxes (18” x 48”) and 3 window boxes (13” x 36”).

We are open to students’ creativity and vision, and welcome any appropriate interpretations of a “New York” theme. All artists will be credited in the restaurant and their work will be for sale at the end of the exhibition. Students have the rare opportunity to display their work in a well-known hotel and highly acclaimed restaurant.

MoCCA Comic Art Festival this weekend!

The program for this year’s MoCCA Art Festival features a rich mix of animators, cartoonists, graphic artists, and writers. Our special guests include Jessica Abel, Rebecca Donner, David Hajdu, David Heatley, Chip Kidd, Alex Robinson, Frank Santoro, and Brian Wood. Saturday’s program opens with author Blake Bell talking about his new Steve Ditko biography, and closes with Dan Nadel in conversation with Chris Forgues (“CF”), whose comics, according to one critic, “exude the ease of someone just now putting all the pieces together to make for consistent great work.” Sunday’s program opens with an illustrated history of radical cartooning, by social movement cartoonist Nick Thorkelson, and closes with a screening of new animated shorts from Scandinavia.

Parsons Illustration associates will be out in force–Tara McPherson, Neil Swaab, Bob Sikoryak, Jillian Tamaki, Brian Wood, and Peter de Seve–so make sure you stop by and see their work!

The MoCCA Art Festival, now in its seventh year, is an annual fundraiser for the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art (MoCCA). Each year the MoCCA Art Festival Award is presented to a creative figure whose work has elevated the cartoon arts. The Award was presented to Jules Feiffer in 2002, and in subsequent years to Art Spiegelman (2003), Roz Chast (2004), Neal Adams (2005), Gahan Wilson (2006), and Alison Bechdel (2007).

This year’s Award recipient, Bill Plympton, is an internationally renowned cartoonist, illustrator, and animator. His cartoons have appeared in major newspapers and magazines, from the Village Voice and the New York Times, to Vogue, Rolling Stone, and Vanity Fair. He is the author and/or illustrator of numerous books and graphic novels, including Hair High, Mutant Aliens, Tube Strips, and The Sleazy Cartoons of Bill Plympton. He is probably best known for his short and full-length animated films, which include The Tune, I Married a Strange Person, Guard Dog, and Idiots and Angels, which premiered earlier this year. Bill Plympton will be introduced by the animator Signe Baumane.

The 2008 program is being held in tandem with an event at NYU that will take place the day before the Festival officially opens, on Friday, June 6. Sponsored by the New York Institute for the Humanities and MoCCA, “Post-Bang: Comics Ten Minutes After the Big Bang!” features roundtables and presentations on “key trends and debates facing comics in this new, ‘post-bang’ environment.” For more information about this, click here

SVA Masters Series Honors Steve Heller

The Masters Series: Steven Heller

School of Visual Arts (SVA), New York City, will honor Steven Heller with the Masters Series Award and retrospective exhibition. He is the author, co-author or editor of over 100 books on graphic design, illustration and political art, was an art director at The New York Times for 33 years and is a columnist for The New York Times Book Review. Heller is also the co-founder and co-chair of the MFA Design Department and co-founder of the MFA Design Criticism Department at SVA.

The art director, writer and design authority will be speaking about his work, with Michael Bierut, partner, Pentagram and founding writer, Design Observer.

Curated and designed by Kevin O’Callaghan, chair of 3D Design at SVA, the exhibition highlights the inspiration and collaboration behind Heller’s many achievements as a writer and art director. On view will be over 100 covers of The New York Times Book Review that Heller art directed and a visual anthology of his major publications, with select volumes available to peruse. An adjacent video installation will feature interviews with co-authors Mirko Ilic, Lita Talarico (co-chair of the MFA Design Department at SVA), Seymour Chwast, Marshall Arisman (chair of the MFA Illustration as Visual Essay Department at SVA) and Gail Anderson (on the faculty of the MFA Design Department at SVA) about their collaborative process. Nearby, visitors will be able to browse Heller’s many contributions to American and foreign periodicals at a full-scale replica of a New York City newsstand. The centerpiece of the multimedia display will be a larger-than-life photo montage of Heller’s library with recorded commentary about his collection of design ephemera and its role in his research and writing.
