Follow-up: Alumni Event at SDCC

Parsons Alumni at Comic Con

Here’s a follow-up recap of Parsons Illustration at San Diego Comic-con from Angie Wojak:

Comic-con was great!  Everyone who came to the Rock Bottom event had the most wonderful, in-depth conversations and all enthusiastically thanked us for the event and said that it was different from other events they’d been to, since it offered lengthy, intimate conversations w/fellow illustrators/animators.

Guests who came included:
–Peter de Seve
-Michael Davis – Early 80’s Illustration grad and writer/animator/director of Clive Owen’s “Shoot ‘Em Up”
–Graham Smith (Illustration grad from mid-80’s, lives in CA, has done Rolling Stone covers among other projects)
-Tom Akel (DT grad working for MTV on a website dedicated to original comic content, I believe)
–Robert Sikoryak (His panel went well!).

I can’t tell you how thrilled Peter and Michael were to chat and they sat for almost an hour looking at each other’s work and talking about their films.  Michael did this fab, brief animation of his plan for shots in Shoot ‘Em Up and based on that alone, he got the movie greenlighted and got the directing gig. He’s very cool and enthusiastic about Parsons/New School.

Alumni and industry friends are invited to join Peter de Seve ’80 (Ice Age) and R. Sikoryak ’87 (Masterpiece Comics) for cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and conversation in San Diego. The event will take place on Saturday, July 25th from 6:00-9:00 p.m. at the Rock Bottom Brewery- Downtown Lounge.

R. Sikoryak is the author of Masterpiece Comics (Drawn & Quarterly),“where classics and cartoons collide.” He’s drawn comics and pictures for Nickelodeon Magazine, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, The New Yorker, The
Onion, and Mad, among other media giants. In his spare time, he hosts the cartoon slide show series Carousel.

Peter de Sève’s illustration and character designs are known throughout the world. Best recognized for his many New Yorker covers and his character designs for the three blockbuster Ice Age movies (“Scrat” is now an
international icon) de Seve has also contributed to such films as Mulan, A Bug’s Life, Tarzan and Finding Nemo.

Alumni Update: Isabel Samaras in the press for her new book

Illustration Alum Isabel Samaras has been catching a lot of press lately in the wake of her very first monograph, On Tender Hooks.  Here’s a little portion of an interview conducted by the fine folks over at Juxtapoz magazine:

How would you describe yourself? Your art?

Gee that’s hard, um, goofy redhead painter?  They say you can’t ever really have a clear picture of what kind of person you are but you can get some idea from looking around at your friends.  They’re an absolutely terrific lot, so maybe that reflects well on me.

I think of my art as lush, visual storytelling (I’m usually either going for a chuckle or a sympathetic sigh) but I have no idea what other people think!

What’s the first piece of art you remember?

My mom put Gaugin prints up around my crib when I was a baby; honestly, I don’t remember that, but I think they probably fed my love of color.

What part of your personality helps you to continue to produce art?

It sure isn’t the hopeless procrastinator part!  I think I’m a fairly solitary creature and that lends itself well to going into troll-mode in the studio and hunkering down for hours.  I’m really happy to spend big chunks of time by myself—as long as I know there’s some social interaction coming along eventually.  That’s what’s so nice about openings — a chance to scrape off the dust and paint, get out and see people.

Parsons will host a panel at Comic-con in July 2008, featuring Parsons Faculty and alumni in a conversation about how art school, and in particular a Parsons Illustration education, prepares young artists to enter these areas of professional activity. The panel is titled:

“Toys, Comics and Characters: Illustrators as Entertainment Entrepreneurs”

Following the panel will be an alumni reception hosted by New School Alumni Relations.  Alumni attending Comic-con (or located in Southern California) and industry friends are invited to join Parsons faculty and representatives from Alumni Relations and Career Services for refreshments and conversation.

The increasing popularity and success of the small gallery has created a need for new, affordable and original art. Exhibiting in a gallery is a great way for illustrators to expand beyond traditional forms of illustration and generate additional income. How do you take that next step into the exhibiting world and get your work out of the studio and on the gallery wall? Illustrator Martha Rich questions gallery curator Jonathan Levine and illustrators Jordin Isip and Tara McPherson about the challenges and successes connected to their gallery experiences. Curious about showing your work in galleries, curating your own shows or developing a new line of revenue and expanding your creativity? This session is for you.
