  • Riley Buttery is a Photographer and multimedia artist based in Brooklyn. Her work primarily deals with the ontological processes within photography and other related art practices.

  • The photographic medium carries its own baggage, those of historical associations, of composition and presentation, and most importantly, of what constitutes an image itself. Blindfields, the name borrowed from Roland Barthes’ Camera Lucida, references the space outside of a film or image, where a viewer insinuates a world beyond the frame, the periphery. These works are a personal reckoning with my photographic afflictions and an amalgamation of peripheral experience. By embedding objects, materials, and images from my archive of found ephemera, as well as the inclusion of original images, I seek to impose a photographic and compositional redux, allowing the viewer to question not only their preconceptions with the medium but with the act of perception. The human need for conclusive impressions and contextualization in art is subverted, the work initiating and silently bearing witness to the viewer’s inner discursive process of determining meaning, order, and function.
