Sydney, Australia based photographer Emma Dayan received a Parsons Dean’s Scholarship (2017-2021). Her work primarily focuses on athlete portraits and sports games specifically exploring the world of women’s sport.

An Athlete is a collection of photographs documenting the experience of one particular female soccer player in a pre-professional league in and around Sydney, Australia. The work strives to normalize the idea of emotion, strength and athleticism in women’s sport. The main subject has been followed during and around her weekly games. This work acts as a motivation both to the subject as well as to any female athlete who sees it. It represents the fact that female athletes are simply that, athletes.
