  • Myu Inoue is a New York-based photographer whose work is influenced by her Japanese and Chinese upbringing. Her practice explores tensions created when navigating societal expectations.

  • I create tableaux using corporate garments in various arrangements, to explore salaryman culture in the collectivistic society of Japan. Salaryman culture describes the rigorous Japanese working spirit specific to white-collar workers, that has been attributed to the Karōshi (“death-by-overworking”) phenomenon. My initial inspiration came from observing how hanging laundry is a display of one’s individuality that is open to external observers. I construct a visual commentary on being a member of a stringent corporation, in a society where individuality is less emphasized, and uniformity and conformity are strictly upheld.
