American Bully

Ben Knight grew up in a small town in Maine. He uses irony and satire to create commentary on white America, internet culture, and fashion.

My Thesis Project, American Bully, reflects on “white trash” stereotypes, Internet culture, and a pervading sense of loneliness and disconnection in America. This project brings together photography, video, embroidery, and screenprinting. I am staging scenes which show pockets of isolated dark groups who find their sense of community and belonging on the internet. This project is a commentary on the common themes of these fringe groups as well as the extreme consequences of loneliness. The work confronts harsh realities and pushes an exaggerated version of these solitary groups, taking their uncomfortable beliefs from the internet and putting it on display.
